Oleg's & Jan's + Dixie's Debutante Ball

Hotel pool on the way back.

========
Oleg's place. Just a wonderful time.

=========
Jan's.
Jan Calvert, the wife of Mike, who is no longer with us. Mike was one of my best friends from the Fauquier County of my youth. We had a delightful afternoon.

I believe Mike's ancestor's Top Hat box may have been more expensive than the object it protected.:)

Nelson Winbush. Be sure to open the link.

Doug, who has been to more Sam Davis Youth Camps than Dixie! A most knowledgeable young man, who just happens to be a Tarheel!:)

I believe I should post comments from other sources here, so Dixie can have a listing in one place.

  1. She is a beatific young lady.

    You should be very proud, both of her and the job you have done raising her.

  6. Thank you for the link, Brock. Miss Dixie is beautiful, winsome and graceful, but I am not noting anything you haven't already observed. I may have to start wearing gray or butternut and learn saber just to keep up with her. And she does a great mermaid impersonation.

  8. Great pictures. Dixie was beautiful and you were quite dapper as well.

    The dress of that time just can't be beat. Especially in those haughty yankee parties.

  11. How time flies. Is Dixie finished High School now?

    Thank you, no she just finished 10th grade. Speaking of time flying,seems like forever since the day you got the Corvette after graduating from West Point!

  15. Hello:

    It looks like the event was a great one. Congratulations!

    I hope that I am not opening up a can of worms with this question but, were there any people of mixed race or of African American heritage at the event (not just as servers)?
    ========
    If you browse through the pictures again, you will see two that I'm aware of. I didn't get to met the lady, but did Nelson Winbush finally. Click on his name and there is a lot of info. There were other races attending, but I didn't post them all. I had over 100 pictures and in total I am sure there were thousands taken with a much lesser amount posted in various places. Thanks.

    1. Sir, thank you for your quick reply. Everyone had a smile on his/her face so it was a glorious event. It must have been very hectic.

      My family has a long history in Alabama (Tallulah County, sorry for the spelling). The Drapers, Lanes, and the Morrows were very wealthy and landed before and during the Civil War. Every thing was taken by the Confederacy and paid for by its worthless paper money. Of course, my family knew it was worthless but being true Southerners, it was accepted.

      I tried to go by the old estate in 1979 but, none of the elders in the family would even talk about going there. I have lost all of the elders since then and my father is almost 92 and refuses to talk about the "Grand Place".

  17. Hello!

    Over here in Texas)San Antonio to be exact) they turn the debut into a real production. At Fiesta they introduce 24 Order of the Alamo Duchesses. 12 are in town and 12 out of town and out of state. Then the Queen and Princess. Each year is a different theme,like this year was Cities. They have a pageant that is open to the public and then the Queens Ball and Garden Party. I don't know how to send links but you can search Order of the Alamo or fiesta coronation and some pics should come up. I think it was only in the 20s that a Hispanic girl has even been Princess. The Coronation is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen. I think it is more classy than the Mardi Gras Queens.
    I like the historic themes they come yup with.
    I hope this never dies out.

  18. I enjoyed the pictures of Dixie's Debutante Ball. That seemed like a big Southern blowout with all the trimmings.

    She really looked beautiful in her gown and you really looked proud of her.
