Jones starts book project on Iraq War
In June 2005, Congressman Walter B. Jones
publicly changed his position on the Iraq War, which he had approved via
resolution on the House floor less than three years earlier.
Now the Republican from Farmville, whose district includes this
county, is working on a book detailing his journey since the war began
brewing, including his vote and the backlash he faced from his
Republican constituents when he sided with Democrats on a timetable for
its conclusion.
The congressman said his heart told him to vote against the resolution to go to war. He even told his chief of staff, Glenn Downs, prior to the vote that he didn’t believe the war was justified. Nor did he believe Saddam Hussein, the former dictator of Iraq, was responsible for the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, or had weapons of mass destruction.
