On 11 July 1804 Vice President Aaron Burr mortally wounded former Treasury secretary and inveterate statist Alexander Hamilton in a New Jersey pistol duel. In a match like that, you simply have no idea who to root for.
On 11 July 1864 Confederate Jubal early began a raid that carried him to the gates of Washington, DC. Unhappily, it didn't carry him clean through the gates.

ReplyDeleteThis is right where I used to live, at the Armed Forces Retirement Home, which during the War of 1861 -1865, was listed on maps of Washington, D.C. as the, "United States Military Asylum".
When I first went there, it was called the United States Soldiers' and Airmen's Home.
On that map, you'll see "Lincoln's Cottage".
It only recently was renamed that.
It used to be called, "Anderson Cottage", after the first commandant of the Soldiers' Home, Major Robert Anderson, who you'll remember was the commander at Fort Sumter when it surrendered.
Originally, the house and farm belonged to the Riggs family, now known for the Riggs Bank.
