Gun manufacturers are now vying for a potentially decades-long coveted contract with the Department of Defense.

The Beretta M9 has been the Pentagon’s go-to pistol for nearly 30 years. The federal contract has helped Beretta sell 600,000 guns, most of which were used by the U.S. Army. The company is still contracted to sell 20,000 more pistols.

  1. Unfortunately, How we choose weapon systems today does not reflect the mission, it reflects society.

We will not choose a weapon for its lethality, we will choose a weapon which will please the lowest possible common denominator which could find its way into our ranks.

It will have to be small enough to accommodate the tiniest of pajama boy and girl hands, its recoil shall be moderate enough to not jar the exquisite senses of these same people. It will have to hold enough rounds to preclude accuracy training, which no one wants to do anymore.

What we should be doing is re issuing 1911s in 45 acp and if our new recruits - either officer or enlisted - cannot handle it, its time we realize THEY are not fit for duty not the weapon.

We should be issuing full sized 308 semi auto battle rifles and commensurate training. It wasn't that many years ago when 17 year olds handled 1903A3s, Garands, and M14s with no problem.

  2. Brock, I can tell you why. We have become a nation of politically correct wimps, that does not understand the difference between a sheep dog (warrior good guys) and a wolf (the bad guys).
A fire arm is a mere tool. It is the will of the person holding it that makes it a weapon. It is the warrior notion of; I AM the weapon.

  3. The unfortunate issue is it must be a 9mm for our NATO relationship. It will need to be a pistol that can be manually cocked/de-cocked and with a real safety - sorry Glock your eliminated right there.

The M9 is a good gun if the ramps and slides are polished and the gun is clean - it will start jamming by the 7th magazine due to it being a dirty running weapon. It will be interesting to see what they come up with. I would like to see an American made sidearm be the weapon of choice.

I also believe that every recruit into the military should be issued a M4 and pistol. Upon their Honorable discharge they should be able to keep the weapons. They should be non-transferable and returned to an Armory when the veteran passes away. Any non-veteran possessing one of these weapons is a 10 year federal offense for each weapon. For people that retire they should have the option of getting new weapons upon retirement.

  4. I'm far from enamored with a 9MM. Your comments on discharge are interesting, but Hussein wouldn't be interested, that's for sure. :)

  5. Brock, the 9mm is more than up to the task. When I was a youngster in deer camp I asked an old timer where is the best place to shoot a deer. His reply "Anywhere in the eye son, anywhere in the eye." With that being said I feel the 9mm is the perfect self defense round. As long as you shoot your opponent ANYWHERE IN THE EYE. Now if you arent that good of a shot (like me)get a 45. Almost anywhere in the body should get the bad guys attention.

    1. You got me at first.:) Two .45's here and a .357. Dixie has a Walther P22 which is fun, I should say.

  6. Ive been training a friend on a Ruger SR22. She is now to the level of being able to put 10 rounds into a 20 oz soda bottle at 7 yards in about 3 seconds. To me that would be about equall to a load of buckshot. Ive said it before, a 22 on your belt is better than a 44 in the truck. And although I said Im not that great a shot, Im downright surgical with my Kimber Custom Classic first gen 1911 45. And it fits my belt just dandy.
