I had a M2 which was left in Vietnam.

"Talking to the old combat veterans especially on the beaches and in the jungles, you saw M1 Garand's, BAR's and Thompson's laying on the ground, but you never saw a .30 carbine laying anywhere, thats how popular they were. "

  1. It was a good video - and the old fella is a good shot.

  2. Having fired both of the rifles, and an M1 Garand, and the owner of all three, I find them a pleasure to shoot. Nothing like a fun history lesson. The carbine is convenient, the Garand accurate, and the SKS a good all round general weapon. In a shtf scenario I'd be hard press to make a decision.

  3. Even in WW2, most of the men serving in uniform did not fire their weapons in combat. So, for them, the most important part of the weapon was it's weight (lighter being better). That made the carbine a clear favorite. But among front-line infantry, I have heard the opposite was true and that men issued the carbines would trade them for the hitting power of the Garand.

This same story happened again for US troops in Bosnia. The M4 was just entering fielding and the predominant weapons for most troops was the full sized M-16A2. But for troops who were never going to use their weapons in combat, carrying around the longer heavier rifle was just a PITA. The smaller/lighter M-4 became the new favorite and coveted gun to get, and this is even before the wide range of optics and do-dads made the M4 a superior weapon in its own right.

I keep a carbine-style AR as my SHTF gun. It is just too convenient, accurate, reliable, practical, and logistically supportable (common ammo with police and military) to consider anything else.

  4. My dad spoke very little of combat and killing in the South Pacific theater. But I remember him being very clear about the stopping power between the two. He felt the Imperial Japanese Marines were drugged up and brainwashed and unless you shot them In the head with the 110 grain carbine round they were not stopping. But most body hits with the 30-06 had a very dramatic effect. I have shot a few deer with the M1 Carbine with soft points and although not impressive the deer never went to far. And I personaly love the M1 carbine and feel it would be a great defensive weapon with expanding ammo.
