Record-low gas prices across the U.S. have given rise to fresh talk in Washington of raising the federal gas tax for the first time in over 20 years, with leading Republicans now saying a hike must not be ruled out.

The GOP has long resisted calls from business leaders and others to boost the 18.4 cent-per-gallon tax as a way to pay for upgrades to the nation’s crumbling roads and bridges.

Yet in recent days, senior Senate Republicans have said they want to keep options open and that "nothing is off the table" when weighing the best mechanisms to pay to finance infrastructure projects.

"I just think that option is there, it's clearly one of the options," said Sen. Inhofe (R-Okla.), new chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.

  1. Get rid of the Federal gas tax....it was instituted to build the Interstate hwy system, now it is built. Let states increase their gas tax as the federal tax is dumped. There is less likelihood of gas tax funding of hike and bike trails and of light rail funding if the federal gas tax boondoggle goes away. And no more Boston big digs for corrupt politicians and contractors. End the federal gas tax now.

  2. Like when the tariff's were stopped and then the income tax was implemented to
of-set the lost revenue..that was the plan all along, to screw the people.
The people are always paying for their waste.

    1. Pleeeeeeeeese. I mentioned this to a lady at Lowe's this afternoon and she paused, looked and said, "They don't miss a trick do they"? No Ma'am. On a more positive note, she has been giving samples for a few weeks of Lowe's sausages which they make in their own facility in NC for distribution and they are never frozen. Most excellent. They now have about 30p varieties and we tried their new one "Texas Pete" tonight - Reminds you of Texas Pete hot sauce which is everywhere in this state, but is actually made here, not in Texas. :)
