ATF shelves controversial bullet ban proposal

Via Eric

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is shelving a proposal to ban a popular but highly lethal type of bullet, amid opposition from gun-rights advocates and hundreds of  members of Congress.

The agency said in a statement on Tuesday it would not seek to issue the final guidelines "at this time." The proposal pertained to M855 "green tip" ammunition, used in the AR-15 rifle, which regulators looked at banning because it can pierce police body armor.

The ATF said it would instead wait until Americans have finished commenting on the federal regulations and evaluate their comments and suggestions before "proceeding with any framework."
The statement follows 52 senators and 238 House members joining in opposition to any attempt the Obama administration might make to ban the ammo.

  2. Waiting is not the same thing as backing down. Why is this even a story. The headline should be "tyranny delayed until surfs get a chance to complain".

    1. I believe they have decided to ditch it completely, but want to back down slowly, so they don't look as much like the idiots that they are. :)

  3. That's not even green tip. It is hornady z tip that some one reloaded and had their bullet seating die set to low and squished the case at the shoulder.

  4. Poor photos aside, the best ammo salesman award goes to..... Demand is up, the ammo they no longer use in combat will sell cleaning out the lakecity warehouse in Independance Mo., all is well by design. Another ammo run, somebody got their pockets lined!

    1. We thought about buying a case for the PATCON raffle, but are going with 55 grain instead, plus a Colt LE and a Burris MTAC 1x4 scope with rings.

    1. Yes, it's nice to have that option. I had a M2 carbine in Vietnam.

  6. We should also have tanks, helos, ADA... I will always have the deepest appreciation and gratitude for our combat vets. Without their sacrifice, what would we have? I (swerved) clinton era 82nd, do nothing, no ammo, drip pans under leaky trucks, disgrace. Wish I could have done more, may still get the chance.....

  7. We just have to have to always be on the alert status from now on. We can't lose any more on the 2nd Amendment. I would like to see ATF backtrack on the 5.45 ammo. It clearly wasn't designed as ap either. N/C in the 5.45 with the steel core would be optimal although I am not against using Windex w/ammonia.

  8. Well full auto up to M-2 HB, MK-19 and a M-79 at least. I'll trade the Bazooka for a Carlos Gustav 84 mm rocket launcher- more flexibility. :-)
