The Confederacy's youngest Colonel, 21 year old Henry King Burgwyn Jr.,
commander of the 26th North Carolina, raised his sword as the troops
pressed forward to drive the Northerners out of Gettysburg's Herr Ridge.

The confusion caused by the similarity in the flags of the Union and
the Confederacy was of great concern to Confederate General P.G.T.
Beauregard after the first Battle of Manassas. He suggested that the
Confederate national flag be changed to something completely different,
in order to avoid confusion in battles in the future. However, this idea
was rejected by the Confederate government. Beauregard then suggested
that there should be two flags. One, the National flag, and the second
one being a battle flag, with the battle flag being completely different
from the United States flag.
