Meanwhile, since all that would take to unleash a full-blown war is for some Russian to be unexpectedly blown up, events like this do not inspire much confidence in the Syrian "ceasefire":
On Saturday, the geopolitical world was shocked when Turkey began shelling Aleppo, where the Syrian opposition has its back against the wall in the face of an aggressive advance by Hezbollah and the IRGC supported, of course, by Russian airstrikes.

To be sure, everyone knew Ankara and Riyadh would have to do something quick if they wanted to preserve the rebellion. Their proxies are being rolled up rapidly by Hassan Nasrallah’s army and Vladimir Putin’s air force juggernaut. But few expected the escalation would come so quickly.

But Recep Tayyip Erdogan is unpredictable (just ask the lone surviving pilot of the Su-24 Turkey shot down in November) and this weekend, he decided that there’s no time like the present when it comes to starting World War III.

  1. The Russo Turkish wars have been numerous and very bloody. I would expect that if the Turks close the Bosporus and Dardanelles to Russian traffic the Russians could be checkmated geographically but that would not prevent them from finding Turkish targets of opportunity. Long way from the eastern Med. to their arctic ports. If the bloody Turks succeed in dtsging NATO into this conflict the Brits could close the Straights of Gibraltar and the Russian fllet would be trapped. But I don't see that happening unless the Russians or Obama do something supremely stupid.

  2. Meanwhile back at the ranch, Assad, with Russia's help, declares every square foot in Syria a true 'no-fly zone', with the immediate downing of any jet in the air that's not Russian. And the whipping of all terrorists in Syria continues, including everyone present who was not invited there by Assad. The quest to remove Assad still goes down in flames, literally if need be, courtesy of Papa Bear ( S-400 & friends ).

A smart man knows when to get out, or stay out, of a game he cannot win. Russia is playing chess, while the rest are playing checkers and hoping to get their kings crowned.

Putin suckered them by not physically supporting Assad at first. The opposition let their guard down and are now getting floored.
