The images colourised by graphic artist Frédéric Duriez reveal the daily lives of beleaguered French soldiers.

They can be seen sharing meals, marching through blitzed towns and carrying bodies across the battlefields.

  1. War is indiscriminate violence (soldiers, civilian, old, and young) at a level of depravity unimaginable to most. I can understand (to a certain extent) why those who have seen it up close, and very personal, don't want to talk about it. After all, who would want to relive the horrific destruction of human beings, some by their very own hands. It becomes something very basic, you fight to survive, and there is nothing neat, and tidy about that.

  2. I second Roswell: I hate war. I don't understand the recent calls for war with North Korea, for example.

    I can't think of a war America was right to enter. The Barbary Wars were probably necessary.
