As I mentioned in the Bravo Company Manufacturing (BCM) MK12 Replica review, there is serious debate about 5.56 versus .308 for urban combat roles. Just a few weeks back, some of the guys still on active duty called a few of us retired guys, and we had round table about what we liked for city fighting. In a meeting with north of 100 years of sniper experience, there was no consensus.

I am so far from a gun expert but I have shot a lot. I carry a 45, not a 9mm. Why? I’m a lifetime believer that bigger is better. Poking a near 1/2” hole in someone it better than a 3/8” hole, for me at least. Same with the .223 vs .308. But here I think the military has a secondary reason for using the .223. I am sure they have never outright said, but the .223 tends not to kill the person behind the one shot. I believe one of the reasons the military went to the .223, is to reduce or eliminate collateral damage. For me I’ll take the .308, and hope if I shoot into a gang coming at me I kill 2-3 with 1 shot. Or at least wound a few. As I said I’m no expert and take my rambling for what it is worth, nothing.

DeleteMe also. I carry a .357, but have a .45 close at hand in the car and home.

As I remember the reason for the AK's 7.62x39 is that it will kill fewer outright and consign those injured to be taken care of resulting in less fighters for the opposition.
Those are both unfounded myths. Both rounds were specifically invented to cut down the size, recoil, and weight of full sized rifle rounds while retaining most of the effectiveness. Thus allowing for fully automatic rates of fire and the ability to carry enough ammo to use it. No ulterior motives were needed.

DeleteThat is an interesting photo. It shows everything that went wrong after the Clinton ban's "sunset". It is 100% pure fad. It has all the latest fads on open display. "AR platform" Check. "Rails?" Check. Barrel to never exceed 18 inches? Check. "Combat rifle" with a scope just because? Check. Collapsing/folding stock? Check. Flash suppressor to reduce the beach ball sized fireball from the too short to burn all the powder barrel? Check. "Mud brown because SF does it that way and the interweb said too". Check. That thing just screams "I never humped a ruck in my life and I plan to fight Zombies from the back of my bubba truck with beer and theme music."--- I like my M1 in 30:06 because if I hit the SOB anywhere between the knees and the head. He's boned. I don't use optics because I don't think I'm Carlos Hathcock and Unlike the 5.56 the 150 grain M2 ball or 163 Grain M2AP puts them DOWN. My backup carbine for close work is the AKM or trusty Rem.870 if they get in the house. I like the .45 ACP handgun because men who are hit ,stay hit, and If I must make holes in men, I want to make BIG holes. Because street gangs, junkies and terror gangs don't even try to recover their wounded, and because dead men don't shoot back. --Ray
