My Saigon

  1. As a 23 year old soldier in the United States Army, when I first arrived in the old Republic of Viet Nam on Friday 12 December 1969, my first assignment was in Saigon at the Phu Lam Signal Battalion of the 1st Signal Brigade, where I was a Private First Class, E-3, Field Radio Relay and Carrier Equipment Repairman (MOS 31L20).

As a member of The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints (i.e., the "Mormon" church), I attended services downtown at a house off Cong Ly Street.
I also visited the Vietnamese American Friendship Club to learn about Vietnamese culture and history.

I once dined at the My Canh floating restaurant, which had been attacked by Viet Cong on more than one occasion.

Later, I went to the 178th Maintenance Company at Dong Ha, and then to the 501st Signal Battalion (Airmobile) of the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) at Camp Eagle (between Hue and Phu Bai).

I left Viet Nam from Da Nang on Monday 21 February 1972.

      That was a pleasant place.

Oh yes and one of my favorites. The best was the rice, etcetera that was brought out while being cooked in a brown clay bowl. I have tried some since then but none have reached their standard.

That is where everyone who screwed up at USARV Headquarters were sent since it was the furthermost north and was rocketed continuously. :)

Memories, memories memories can we do it again......? :)
