The Bill of Rights, integral to the U.S. Constitution, lays out the rights of the people. The Second Amendment is a “natural right” that supports the right of liberty.
At the time of the writing of the Bill of Rights, there was no standing army, hence they added that a “well-regulated militia” was necessary to the defense of the nation. Our Founders knew that any government, including ours, could become a tyranny of power over the people and thus, they guaranteed the people the right to defend themselves. Jefferson is quoted, “Laws that forbid the carrying of arms. . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.
