  1. Looks like he was coming in pretty hot, may have had icing issues. Amazing that two crew members survived. That was a hard landing for a lot of different reasons. Diverting to another runway must not have been an option. Good video though, even under miserable weather conditions. Thanks Brock.

    1. Wonder if that would have happened if they dumped fuel before the attempt?

  2. that may have been why he couldn't divert. Nothing could get up to top him off. No info on where the base was, or how far away another (flight time/headwinds/weather conditions) landing strip might have been. No info on in-flight issues that would prevent prolonged flight. My best guess would be icing issues or he couldn't get the wings forward to extend flaps/slats. Mix with poor/bad visibility due to whiteout conditions, perhaps faulty guidance instruments (ice again on the aircraft, and/or ground); who knows? Looks to me that he was very hot upon approach, and slapped the runway pretty hard. I helped pickup an F-111A that pancaked into the East Oregon desert once. Literally, out in the middle of no where, mid January 1989. Ended up getting the important stuff, and burying the rest.

    1. Thanks and I saw this:

Long range bomber Tu-22M3 bombe’s crew allowed landing with increased load.
