The U.S. Air Force developed a new assault rifle
that breaks down into two pieces, allowing it to be stored in the
ejection seat of modern jets. The GAU-5A carbine is designed to provide
the firepower necessary for aircrew to defend themselves until rescue.
The
GAU-5A was designed by the Air Force Gunsmith Shop, which, according
to Military.com, was formed in 1958 to repair and refurbish all small
arms for the Air Force, from pistols to .50-caliber machine guns. The
Air Force maintains a large arsenal of firearms carried by security
forces, mounted on vehicles, and packed away for aircrews.

Deletei carried my model 19 S&W .357 for many a year, issue .38 was like throwing spitballs. if I had to do it again, glock in 10mm with three mags. hands down.
Deleteduring escape and evasion trying to stay free long enough to get rescue, question the need for a carbine, trade that for water and comms and cammo. being quiet and sneaky is good. if he gets one it better have an effective suppressor. aircrew on the ground is not thinking straight at first and just did something traumatic. he is not rambo, he is usually hurt and trying to calm down. he is now outside previous experience. training helps. a lot. i'll tell you this much; we always wanted grenades because they are useful tools when needed to get someone off your backtrail. styer makes this nifty little puppy the size of a golf ball with a 5m kill radius. we were told no fucking way. they're too dangerous. yeah.
survival situation? maybe 300blk or better. anything big enough to warrant a rifle better have a rifle bullet. what do you think a polar bear or leopard seal or grizzly or a tiger would do if you hit them with a .556? what if .50 beowulf? think like you just dropped onto someone's dinner plate. that's what my thoughts are on needs for a carbine.
