Join Donald Livingston, Philip Leigh, and Samuel Mitcham for a discussion on the causes of the War for Southern Independence. Hosted and moderated by Brion McClanahan.
Was the War about slavery? Did the North go to war to end slavery and did the South fight to protect the institution? The modern narrative creates a dichotomy of a noble North fighting against a morally corrupt and evil South. Is this true? What role did slavery play in the conflict leading to the War and did secession require a military response? With Confederate monuments, symbols, and figures under constant attack by establishment academics and political leaders, the War has become both a political and historical topic and now has a central role in our public discourse. These questions must be addressed and are central to our historical consciousness as Americans.
Panelists:
Donald Livingston is the founder and president of the Abbeville Institute.
Philip Leigh is an historian and author who has written five books on the War and Reconstruction, the most recent being Causes of the Civil War (Shotwell, 2020).
Samuel Mitcham holds a Ph.D in American History from the University of Tennessee and has written over forty books on military history, including the recently published It Wasn't About Slavery (Regnery History, 2020).

Zoom, the company that provides a popular video conferencing platform, recently shut down a U.S.-based human rights organization’s account when the organization was hosting an online event to commemorate the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. Zoom has faced many security concerns in the past, but this latest incident raised fresh questions about its relationship with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and whether Americans should rely on Zoom so much in our day-to-day lives.
