Al White: The Story of a Marine Grunt in the First Battle of Khe Sanh April 1967 (One of the best)

LANGUAGE!

He brings up racism many times at the beginning, which I never saw in the Army. I went in one year earlier (1966) and took basic at Fort Bragg, then AIT at Camp Lee, then assigned Permanent Party at Fort Knox in a training division, then to Vietnam after a short stay. I spent a total of 21 months in Vietnam, then got out with 31 months total as you would be let go if you came back with 5 months or less. (pre-planned). Then off to OICC Saigon as a Budget Analyst and later with  DAO (Defense Attaché Office) American Embassy until the end.

Vietnam Babylift, My Story

  1. I went into the Marines right out of high school in June '74. I don't recall any racism in my time either, though most hung out with their own. Some of my best buds were Hispanic. I thank God to this day I never had to experience combat. What a great interview. My best civilian buddy had a brother in law I was friends with. Vietnam combat Marine, messed up by a bouncing Betty. This vet would share some stuff when beer'd up. I love listening to in country Vietnam vets share their experiences. Dad, a combat Marine in WWII, never would share much. One or two R&R stories. He had ptsd big time. God bless them.

Thanks and I like that! :) When I worked in Saigon my friends were Sanchez, Swindler and Dunlevy mentioned in the two Special Services links. One from Puerto Rico and two from the south, one black and one white.
