Myth-Busting At Widener's: Guns & Locks

shooting a lock

Via Jacob Long Hi Brock, I just wanted to check-in with you to see how 2021 is going so far. I can see you've been busy, I was just reading your post "I Listen"  about southern writers and it reminded me of this quote by William Faulkner:"If a story is in you, it has to come out."

We're still working hard to keep a little bit of ammunition on the shelves at the warehouse, hopefully, you are stocked up. For those asking, we are getting in new shipments weekly, so if you're looking for anything specific, let me know and I'll keep an eye out. I'm staying optimistic that things in the industry will get back to normal sooner, rather than later.

Anyway, we've been having some fun recently at the gun range. We've all seen a movie, or TV show, where the bad guy shoots a padlock off to make his escape. We were curious ourselves, so we set out to prove or bust the myth that shooting a padlock will cause the lock to fail. I added the link below if you, or your audience is curious to see if we busted this myth, or just ruined a bunch of padlocks.

  1. So here is bit of trivia.

"The packaging for each Masterlock we purchased features an image of a lock with a bullet hole in the upper right-hand corner."

Indeed. That image was inspired by this commercial--

The shooter is Jim Bell, pictured here on the left--

I only know this because I used to shoot NRA Highpower matches with Jim in the 90's.

Very interesting and thanks. Were the matches all in one location....?

The matches I shot with Jim, yes. We shot at the old Paradise Rod and Gun Club range when it was located up above Magalia, CA. Jim lived in Paradise and my family and I just down the hill in Chico. Yeah, Paradise as in the town destroyed by fire.

Here are some photos of that old range--

Here's the funny part. Look at the photo of the prone match shooters. I did not discover until just today the near shooting stool is mine! Still have it. It is unique because I bought the basic folding stool, then added those wheels and used a tubing bender to form aluminum conduit to make the handle.

My memory is too dim to recall that specific day, but I am gonna say that is my buddy Walt shooting his Garand. We would shoot different relays on the same firing point so we could share equipment.

Wife and I escaped Kalifornia for Texas in 2015.

A Small World! Reminds me of a post by that that name.

One of the first times I went to Bien Hoa, I was walking down a dirt street when the two swinging doors of a bar abruptly opened and a soldier came flying out backwards into the street, evidently as a result of a fight. When I looked down at him, he was a friend from college in Virginia!

I'm glad you got out and what is the gun club now?

See my link above and peruse their menu. The new location is about mid-way between Paradise and Chico (see map at link).

Like airports and garbage dumps, they got pushed from their old location by political pressure sponsored by real estate developers. Fortunately they were able to work out some sort of land swap. That had it's follies too.

Seems some folks in the general vicinity of the (then proposed) new range raised a stink about possible noise issues. Hired an attorney. Contracted somebody with a sheep skin diploma and a decibel meter. They set up the meter at the edge of their property closest to the range, and had somebody else fire a 30-06 on the range property. About that same time, some trucker coming downhill on the highway across the canyon engaged his Jake Brake. The Jake Brake was louder than the gun shots.
