"Find Of The Century" - Rare 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder Found In Shipping Container

 Via Phil

About two hours later, on that Friday, Old Crow Speed Shop revealed they found what appears to be a pristine 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder. Baby boomers may remember the sportscar is the same one that American actor James Dean died in. Only 90 of the 1200-pound aluminum-bodied cars were ever built, making it an extremely rare car. About three years ago, only of these cars sold for $4.5 million at Pebble Beach.

In what usually turns out to be a barn find, Old Crow Speed Shop posted a lengthy Facebook post on uncovering the rare Porsche from a shipping container:

  1. I read this and was wondering whose land was the container on.
Also, who would just go off and leave the car and never return for it -
probably died and no one else knew of the car's existence. That's
    all I can imagine.
Now, if we can just find that Confederate gold.

  2. The older 4 banger Porsche's that had less than 140 hp were some of the best built and dependable cars made. I have an uncle that got stationed in Germany in 1966. He had his new Mustang GT shipped over. After 4 years there with one in Vietnam he came home with a 69 912 and left for another year in Vietnam a few months later. He put the 912 in storage where it remained for 15 years and he got it running again his last year in the Army.

It was his daily driver for 20 years. He did an engine rebuild bumping the displacement and converting to fuel injection. He also replaced the 4 speed with a 5 speed transaxle, re-built the suspension, added AC, and had the interior and headliner refreshed. He also had the car's paint re-sprayed after some dings were repaired. He spent more on the restoration than what the car cost when new. It is weekend and special occasion car now. It is not that quick but it handles great for a car that is approaching 500K miles.
