In 1863 and 1864, eight former slaves toured the northern states to raise money for impoverished African-American schools in New Orleans; four children with mixed-race ancestry and pale complexions were deliberately included to evoke sympathy from white northerners. Photographs of Charles Taylor, Rebecca Huger, Rosina Downs, and Augusta Broujey were mass-produced and sold as part of the campaign.

In my biological family's documented history, i.e.,
ReplyDelete"THE TRUEBLOOD FAMILY IN AMERICA 1692 - 1963", it is recorded that one of the runaway slaves assisted by the Underground Railroad was a mysterious white boy who never spoke.
Since, at this point in history, it was common for orphans in Scotland to be kidnapped and sold into slavery on the Carolina plantations (even though England had outlawed the practice), as told in the Robert Louis Stevenson novel, "KIDNAPPED", I have wondered if maybe the runaway white slave boy only knew the Gaelic language, and that was why he never spoke?
Also, some years ago, when doing some research, I noticed in an 1870 United States Census that a former Negro slave family in Kentucky also included in their household a white boy from Ireland.
