Rand Paul grilling Dr Fauci: "Until you accept responsibility, we're not going to get anywhere close to trying to prevent another lab leak of this dangerous sort of experiment. You won't admit that it's dangerous, and for that lack of judgment, I think it's time that you resign." pic.twitter.com/L1GNw9Nu9S

In the abstract, doing research in emerging viral strains in the place where they were emrging makes some sense. Once the "bug" got loose, China made sure it got to the west by maintaining international air travel after they shut down internal travel. SARS-1 was contained. Apparently, the bugs killing chickens and pigs was contained. The SARS-II (COVID-19) was intentionally spread. Fauci has been mum about that "intentional" act.
ReplyDeleteI fail to see the point of using "gain of function" in germ research.
ReplyDeleteI see it as like trying to improve airplane safety by deliberately designing planes that are unsafe, letting them crash, and expecting to learn something new about plane crashes.
Small point. It wasn't "germs", it was new viral strains.
ReplyDeleteChina is and has been for a millennia or more, a pest hole creating new and horrible diseases. Southern China is wall-to-wall rice paddies where wild animals, migratory birds, farm animals and farm bird all eat, drink, and crap along with a billion or so humans with primitive hygene. There are no "cattle drives" and little refrigeration. Food is grown near where it is consumed. If a random mutation will allow a bug (virus or bacteria) to jump to a new species (including humans) that is where it is going to happen. U.S. animal production is, in comparison, "industrial" and conducted in remote locations. In Indianna, along I-64 amid the oil and gas wells are acres of "school buses". WTF? Pig "farmers" buy old school bus chassis, and do some chopping to make pig shelters. Water is piped in and food (mash) delivered in special semi hopper trucks. The food troughs are sort of covered to keep the birds out. The closest city, Louisville, is probably a hour away (by Interstate). China had some nasty out breaks of SARS-I, and some chicken and pig plagues, but were apparently unwilling to rebuild and relocate their food production. Finding a source virus, and then host animal MIGHT provide other options (e.g. a vaccine or extermination).
A sort of related quote, "If you are going to study some deadly virus, like Ebola, it is better to do it along the Congo River instead of in Atlanta or in some Maryland facility." Secure, sanitary facilities are a PITA to operate. Longh ago, I visited a new tissue culture lab that was all shiney and new and well equipped. It smelled like donuts from the bakery several blocks away. The air handler was a joke that brought in yeast spores, mold spores (common in the Mid-West) and umpty-doze types of plant pollen. By time they got that sorted out, I had found other ways to spend my time and energy. A comment that I appreciated, "The cortrupt good-old-boy Communist system was as likely to run an effective viral institute as Flint was to provide safe water or East Saint Louis (Illinois) was to operate a sewer system". [Same kind of people.] So, it made sense to try and locate the original virus and to do the work in a place where the natural source lived.
I have no idea whether the 'Rona Cof came from a lab or from chicken sh*t, but it seems clear that once the CCP knew that they had a problem, they made sure it got to the West. They shut down internal travel but kept international travel open. They had to know what would happen!
So, I am less concerned about Fauci facilitating "gain of function" work [that is grant talk for viral mutation studies] than I am about him not talking about the Chinese "intentional" spread of whatever it was.
As for "mutations", the bug (virus) most common in the West has (I read) about 100 mutations from the original bug that savaged China. Most mutations don't matter. If there is a change in the internal structure, the immune system probably can't "see" it. The current drive for vaccinations is puzzling. I have to figure that some POS has figured out how to get a slice of the vaccine administration costs, so every "risky" shot is money in his/her pocket. I think that it is clear that the 'Rona is primarily a risk to those with medical "comorbidities (conditions). Talk to your doc about the vaccination and treat what you can.
I can't do much about my age (a comorbidity) and my doc thinks that a cute middle-age red head with a sense of humor and a Tidewater accent will not be covered by my insurance. You and your physician may have other options.
Rand Paul is controlled opposition.
