Buckner dicked around for months until a lucky artillery round saved the Americans by killing him. Then, the Marines to over the battle and the island was secured in a very short time.
When I was a boy, we lived at Ashiya Air Force Base, Japan, where Daddy was a Master Sergeant in the United States Army, following his service in the Korean War.
When we sailed back to San Franciso from Yokohama, it was aboard the USNA GENERAL SIMON B. BUCKNER (T-AP-123).
