*After the Guadalajara fiasco, I basically beat all my problems only to return to Emerald Isle and the emergency room in Morehead City. As the surgeon and I walked to the operating room she said you need to make a decision which concerned the small intestines as they appeared to be interlocked with the large ones. She could let me go gently or brought back for two or three days to say goodby as you cannot live without small intestines except in rare instances and mentioned that she was brutally honest in all cases. I said I would tell her before put to sleep and picked the former. When I awoke I was told she had found only that the small ones had moved around the large ones
and both were in good shape with good blood circulation and said that she hadn't seen this before and we might have to go back in. Additionally, I wouldn't be out of the woods but the next three days would be critical which I assumed the small ones might return from whence they came after she replaced them. Haven't fully recovered from this one but on the way I pray.

DeleteGlad to see you are still above ground. Glad you have an honest surgeon. Many are hesitant to be 100% honest about things. Sadly I must say it sounds like your health care woes have been forestalled, not ended. After 45+ years in healthcare I can say that you have a long road to full recovery with a lot of chances still for things to go wrong. Hopefully you will make it. Some do, most don't. So make sure you have hugged your kids and grand kids and settled things that need settling. Because modern medicine can work wonders but it does not perform miracles.

Hi Brock - I am happy to see you looking so well despite all you've been through - when I first read that the doctor told you no one can live without their small intestine, I knew that is not true. My dear departed father-in-law lived with no intestines for more than 40 years. He died from a logging truck crashing into his car in 1997 at the age of 79. He could have gone on for another 10 years easy.
DeleteAs to your question "What keeps intestines in place," I looked it up. Glad I did because apparently this was not settled science. The Mesentery is now defined as a "single organ" that does the job. Pretty interesting, so here's the link for your review:

Thanks. The surgeon told me that you can live with no large intestines and with a minimum amount of small intestines. Thank you for the link and I am curious as to why this is almost one year old and if correct the surgeon was going to let me die. Strange and I'll contact her. Hope y'all are well.

ReplyDeleteHi Brock. A friend had a son who went years before having a problem with his intestines. Seems they were not attached to anything and were like intestines just dropped in a bucket. The kid had surgery at St. Jude's hospital in Memphis and came out in great shape with all the appropriate parts attached where they needed to be. DeleteHey Brock, My family Dr told me 30+ years ago that I had a very large hiatal hernia. Fast forward to this past March. My stomach had moved almost to my collar bone and had drug the 1st part of my small intestine part way up. It got so that I could hear gurgles high up in my chest. The surgeon put both organs back where they belonged all done laparospy.
ReplyDeleteAt a followup meeting with my heart doctor he told me that found out the cause of my condition . . . . . TOO MANY BIRTHDAYS - woohoo what a diagnostician! We're still continuing to pray for you and yours up here in onion country.
