I feel that I am a die hard patriot. Even so, I would much rather have my plain ole red dotted AK than the most tacticool AR. I love the simplicity, and the reliability without strenuous attention to cleaning. Also, being a seasoned machinist/hobbyist gunsmith, I could EASILY throw one together on short notice. Throw in the cheapness, it makes a good everyman's rifle. I know that sounds commie as hell too, but Ford made the automobile everyman's by making it simple and cheap to build quickly, like old Kalashnikov and the AK. I guess what I'm gettin at is I don't care that it originated from commies. A simple, reliable, low-cost design is a good design.
Agreed and why I have one along with Glocks. I had to leave two AK's in Vietnam during the evacuation and they were thrown down a well before the commies got there in fear the holders would be targeted. Be interesting to see their condition now and I am sure non-fireable, but if they had been buried in dirt, quite the opposite.
The AK-47 has been trashed talked, put down, demonized as a commie gun and as such some how evil and unAmerican (<- Given the way things are in the land of Mordor on the Patomic; UnAmerican? Is that a bad thing?) But nobody has ever said that they did not have enough gun when they had an AK-47. I'd bet too, that had Mr Kalashnikov been a guy from Omaha He would be a national hero, the "faults" of his rifle would be praised. It would be mom, apple pie, baseball and the AK-47 Bottom line, would you in combat situation or urban riot, trust an AK-47 to keep you alive?

Love my AK variant Saiga in .223. It was designed and built to comply with the Clinton "assault weapon" ban. Now Obama has outlawed it and everything Izhmash makes. CH
