In three weeks, Utah intends to seize control of 31.2 million acres of its own land now under the control of the federal government. At least, that’s the plan.
In an unprecedented challenge to federal dominance of Western state lands, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert in 2012 signed the “Transfer of Public Lands Act,” which demands that Washington relinquish its hold on the land, which represents more than half of the state’s 54.3 million acres, by Dec. 31.
So far, however, the federal government hasn’t given any indication that it plans to cooperate. Still, state Rep. Ken Ivory, who sponsored the legislation, isn’t deterred.

Another trip down Memory Lane, shall we - when you think of a National Monument, you don't think of millions of acres excluded from any development - this is more insidious than the linked articles go into. Who was President when we got into this Big Global Mess in the first place by signing the World Heritage Treaty of 1972 (Nixon, so none of them are to be trusted):

DeleteNever going to happen. What the Fed takes they keep.
ReplyDeleteBadger
I'm afraid so.
DeleteGoing to be interesting to see how this ends up. I think all states should suceede from DC and form a new nation. Take everbody who loves DC and put them there. See how long DC lasts without our tax $$$
ReplyDeleteSecession Now!
DeleteMost of these lands the fed gov claims as theirs are barren - therefore, according
ReplyDeleteto the law of land brought about by The Constitution (a bankruptcy compact) designates and limits the powers of the newly established central government and restrict its venue to a district not exceeding 10 miles square and areas purchased for forts, magazines, arsenals, dockyards, and other needful buildings. The description of "needful" buildings have changed somewhat with the passage of time but the
rule of law has not. There is nothing said about stealing natural resources either..
Thanks and instructive.
Deleteit might interest you all to know that the 2015 Defense authorisation act includes the transfer of tens of thousands of acres of federal lands to private and local government hands. All quietly and without any fuss.
ReplyDeleteLet me know if you want a list.
Thanks and I'll be happy to post it.
DeleteWill this end up as another Whiskey Rebellion, or will someone get to the Gov quietly and make the needed threats to get him to back off?
ReplyDeleteIf Utah pulls this off, I put real money that other states will follow almost immediately.
