Bowe Bergdahl Charged With Desertion, Lawyer Says

American soldier and former Taliban captive Bowe Bergdahl has been charged with desertion over his disappearance from an Afghan outpost in 2009, Bergdahl's attorney told ABC News today. 

Bergdahl was freed after five years in Taliban captivity in a controversial deal last year in which the U.S. agreed to release five mid- to high-level Taliban figures from detention in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. As part of the deal, the Taliban five were relocated to Qatar.

    If the Board of Court Marshall will supply the guilty verdict, I am sure there will be no shortage of vets, willing at their own expense to supply either the bullets or the rope.

    I am glad they charged him. He is a coward and a traitor. In my day, if you wanted out, you hit your superior officer, now, you will spend time in the brig and get less then an honorable discharge, but hey, you were a man and no one could call you a coward or a traitor. I would actually pay the .gov to reinstate me at my former rank so I could either pull the bang switch, or yank on the trap door handle...

      But the death penalty wasn't mentioned. I thought desertion in time of war carried that penalty.
