A Japanese
university has opened a museum acknowledging that its staff dissected
downed American airmen while they were still alive during World War Two.
The move is an striking step in a society where war crimes are still
taboo and rarely discussed, although the incident has been extensively
documented in books and by US officials.
A gruesome display at the newly-opened
museum at Kyushu University explains how eight US POWs were taken to the
centre’s medical school in Fukuoka after their plane was shot down over
the skies of Japan in May 1945.There, they were subjected to horrific
medical experiments – as doctors dissected one soldier’s brain to see if
epilepsy could be controlled by surgery, and removed parts of the
livers of other prisoners as part of tests to see if they would survive.

Like my uncles who were in WWII said, "nobody wanted to be captured by the Japanese, German's were okay if captured."
ReplyDeleteI can see why. Unfathomable.
Yes, the Germans respected us, but not the Russians.
DeleteIs this a picture of the actual men who were captured by the Japanese?
ReplyDeleteYes, see the link Don't know why your post just showed. Thanks.
DeleteYes, identified at the link.
ReplyDelete"Terrible fate: Captain Marvin Watkins, top left, and his crew were downed over Japan. Six of them and two others not pictured were dissected alive or subjected to other terrible medical experiments at Kyushu University. Pictured in the back row (l to r) are: Marvin S. Watkins (interrogated and released at the end of war) William R. Fredericks (died in medical experiment), Howard T. Shingledecker, (fate unknown), Charles M. Kearns (died at crash site), Dale E. Plambeck (died in medical experiment) Front row: Robert C. Johnson (died at crash site), Teddy J. Ponczka (died in medical experiment), Robert B. Williams (died in medical experiment), Leon E. Czarnecki (died in medical experiment), Leo C. Oeinck (died at crash site), John C. Colehower (died in medical experiment)"
And yet in this day and age we have Americans spouting how badly American troops treat POWS.
ReplyDeleteExcellent point.
DeleteThe picture is of the Enola Gay according to a commenter. I could not imagine
ReplyDeletewhat hell they went thru. Purely sadistic.
Thanks, but I don't believe so. If you copy the picture's location, and goggle it, all the hits come back to this incidence.

The Japanese never had a tradition of taking POW's....the bushido mentality meant that anyone who surrendered was a coward, less than human. So they treated anyone they captured as less than human. The litany of the atrocities committed in the name of the Emperor would fill an encyclopedia. And many Japanese war criminals were even more unrepentant than the Nazi's at Nuremberg.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to this we are seeing the typical use of historical revision to alter blame being applied in modern Japan. PM Abe refuses to acknowledge Japanese war crimes, his position is that Japan did not start the war but was pushed into it by the US. Japan was the victim and the US use of atomic warheads was the real war
crime.
Adm. Halsey made a statement at the beginning of the war that when things were over
the only place the Japanese language would be spoken would be in hell.....a fitting sentiment at the time. The American military was well aware of the evil the Japanese high command visited on any people they conquered. The rape of Nanking and the suffering of the Chinese for a full decade before Pearl Harbor was well known.

DeletePrecisely.
