On September 12, 1864, General John B Hood wrote a letter to General Sherman condemning him for his wanton shelling of Atlanta:
“There are a hundred thousand witnesses that you fired into the habitations of women and children for weeks, firing far above and miles beyond my line of defense. I have too good an opinion, founded both upon observation and experience, of the skill of your artillerists, to credit the insinuation that they for several weeks unintentionally fired too high for my modest field-works, and slaughtered women and children by accident and want of skill.”

I am a "Damn Yankee" by the unfortunate geographical place of my birth, (Michigan) But, By God I am a Southern by the Grace of God! What Sherman did was an act of a coward, a traitor and a mental case, he should have been impeached at the least and lose every benefit to be had by his rank, or, at the best, tracked and assassinated by loyal CSA agents. He should never have gotten that far, what a shame on our history and civilization.
ReplyDeleteA shame he is, Sir, but a glorious hero to the current commies in power all over the world in every occupation.
DeleteTo destroy a city that has no military significance, to target civilians (women and children) is a war crime and an atrocity. I disagree with Cederq on this point, Sherman was not a coward, he was a monster. What he did to Atlanta was evil.
ReplyDeleteOn a related note, Yes I am grateful that we defeated the Nazis, however I still consider the fire bombing of Dresden a war crime. It was mass torturous murder of helpless civilians. Let's us be honest here, if the Nazis had done the same thing to London, we would never forgive them of that or forget it. It is amazing what evil deeds you can do when you are the victor. This is one history lesson we have learned well.

DeleteIndeed.
I spit on the ground every time his name is spoken. Just like my grand parents and parents did. I think I told you my boss from Ohio used to do it to make me do it, until I spit on his rug and he quit doing it. Sherman was a war criminal period.

DeleteHa! :)
Sherman was just another of Cromwell's evil children. Just as Jeff Davis said.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
