"Governor, if I had foreseen the use those people designed to make of their victory, there would have been no surrender at Appomattox Courthouse; no sir, not by me. Had I foreseen these results of subjugation, I would have preferred to die at Appomattox with my brave men, my sword in my right hand."

General Lee to Governor Stockdale at the *Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs, Summer 1870
(*Where my military school, Greenbrier had its Final Ball each year.)

  1. Hi Brock,
Unfortunately, hind sight is only 20/20!!
However,...Lee may have Surrendered his Sword, but that did not "End" the War.... it just stopped the open warfare.....
Here it is over 150 years later and the Confederate Flag still flies...in some places even higher than Old Glory.... The "Spirit of the South" was not Surrendered.... I have noted in my travels that the Confederate Flag flies high even in the "North!!" (Go Figure!!)
Flags and Swords are tangible objects but the "Spirit" is in the Soul and cannot be destroyed, compromised ...or Surrendered!!

"Force may crush and overwhelm Truth to the ground! But, crushed, .....or not,...'Truth is still Truth!!!!'"
    -a Southern Patriot-

I have a feeling.....deep in my soul....there is a time....and I feel that it is coming soon....there will be a "Reckoning!!!" Shots will be fired and Names, I doubt, will be bothered to be taken!!! If you want a "View" ..draw up "Open Range" with Costner and Duvall in the "Gun Fight scene....." It's gonna' get nasty!!
    Meanwhile, back at the ranch........
God, Gunz and Gutz .....Keep the SOUTH Free!!!,
    Time to 'LOCK AND LOAD,"........OUTLAW!!!!!,

    1. :) Grant didn't ask for his sword and I am curious what would have transpired if he did.
