Alumnus: ‘Now, for $20K a year, VMI will turn your teenagers back into children’

The Virginia Military Institute now offers a "stress busters" program for cadets that includes coloring book stations. References to the program were removed from VMI's website after The Washington Free Beacon first reported on the story Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016. (Facebook, VMI)

Cadets at the famed Virginia Military Institute are being offered coloring books as a way of dealing with the stresses of becoming citizen-soldiers.

Lexington, Virginia, is home to one of the most storied educational institutions in the nation. VMI, a state-run school founded in 1839, routinely churns out highly educated and patriotic leaders. Now, however, a “Stress Busters” program made available to cadets is raising eyebrows among alumni.

Screenshots of VMI’s website on Tuesday by The Washington Free Beacon notified visitors that the 2016-2017 academic year would merge cadet government under the Cadet Equity Association’s (CEA) Training and Education branch. CEA educators trained in various forms of stress management offer “activities such as yoga, therapy dogs, coloring book stations, card/game stations, and grab-and-go snacks” for a “Stress Busters” held on Reading Day.

VMI removed references to the program on Tuesday upon the publication of The Free Beacon’s article.

  1. Odd. They used to pay extra to get extra stress added on.

  3. Dear God, will it ever end? Surely this is not the same VMI that closed down on May 15, 1864 for the cadets to engage the Yanks at the town of Newmarket, VA. The victory there saved local crops for Lee and caused a shake up in Grant's staff. I believe an annual ceremony at the battlefield museum still honors the 10 cadets killed and 43 wounded on that day on which some 240 showed up to fight. Nary a coloring book among the whole student body I'll bet.

Of course even the Confederate Battle Flag Streamer has been banned along with playing Dixie.

  4. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!! Even our future warriors are turning into beta males. When I was that age "Stress Busters" meant going out, drinking beer and getting laid.

  5. Stonewall Jackson is rolling in his grave. And this is not an easy task with only one arm. I wonder how the cadets would fair at Gettysburg or Bull Run.

  6. If you see anything like this about The Citadel, please don't print it.
    I don't think I could take it.

Why, I would never have imagined, as I'm sure the generations who proceeded them never had such. I guess the Seals, Green Berets and Rangers have coloring books also, because they would need them to avoid stress when their life is at stake under fire.......

I hope you were being facetious.

    2. i hope you don't believe everything you read in the washington times either. many of those seals etc are vmi graduates btw.

    3. So, they were helped along the road to becoming SEALS by their use of coloring books, correct? No, my knowledge is from my brother-in-law who graduated in the class of '50, my fellow officer Greenbrier classmate who was the Commandant (not that I approve of his chastising those who played a few notes of Dixie after the yearly remembrance, though) and there were many others among one who was my roommate one year..

  8. Yesterday I commented about the 240 cadets who defended Newmarket, VA in the battle of May 15, 1864, in which 10 died and 43 were wounded. Not a girly-man, coloring book user in the entire Corps. As an adopted by marriage Virginian, I am embarrassed by today's VMI.

    1. A couple of years ago they had Morris Dee$ there and his speech was mandatory which told me all I needed to know as far as the mindset in charge then. Sad.

  9. Just read the U.S. Naval academy was doing the same thing as VMI. If the Japs had waited until 2020 to attack Pearl Harbor they would win, hands down.

  10. blame the leadership all you want. hell, they blocked access to a flagger/re inactor and posted guards to keep cadets from interacting with him a while back. but never doubt the corp of cadets. they are as true as ever, at least the contracted ones. vmi is not immune to political correctness but the vast majority of cadets recognize it for what it is. they are also not immune to title 10 nor other feel good regulations. that doesn't make them less patriotic, honorable, nor professional in the end. as alumni you should be calling the board of visitors and voicing your displeasure rather than airing your laundry on the net. you know, that whole praise in public/ punish in private thing that every good nco lives by?
