The quote about the lie I'm pretty sure is out of context.
I see people all the time arguing how what he really said is this society lies, and that if a lie is told frequently enough it's seen as truth.
Hitler was bad, but some of the policies he had were not. He's just not someone anyone wants to defend. Wikipedia lists their platform. One of them includes colonizing land for Germany's "surplus population"... So, essentially Germans were to remove others, take their land. That's where he's really bad.
Note: "We demand land and territory (colonies) for the sustenance of our people, and colonization for our surplus population."
Hitler's defenders will argue that it was never proven that he killed millions in captivity. And they'll argue how Germans after the war were ethnically cleansed across Europe, millions raped and millions killed.
The lesson I gather from NS is that if you want to get along with your neighbors, don't talk of taking their land... So, even if they're correct, no one wants to defend a guy who wanted to expand Germany at others' expense.
His defenders argue that what Hitler truly wished is to defend Europe from Communism. But NS doesn't at all seem to focus on Europe. It focuses on Germans and on Nordics in general.
I've lately been reading the AltRight debate NS. People have lost faith in capitalism, and they don't know what other systems exist. So, some claim NS should be embraced... I say NS is death, but no one cares what I say :p
Interestingly, some have been arguing how NS is neither nationalist nor socialist. I personally tire of hearing the debate, but supposedly it wasn't full socialism. What it meant by "socialism" was not Marxian socialism.
Also, Evola who was big at the time once argued that race was more spiritual than genetic. So, presumably that means non-Germans could become Germans. So, there are lots of details.
At the end of the day, I just don't care about the history. Hitler supposedly killed millions, and people don't want to be associated with someone who killed millions.
If the Alt Right comes to embrace NS, then it's just going to destroy its appeal with most Americans.
Thanks, excellent comments and he was adamant about land due to the settlement of WWI. As has been said before, there would have been no WWII if the WWI peace agreement wasn't so harsh.
