Attorney General Jeff Sessions: 'We don't have a sentencing problem, we have a crime problem'

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Thursday criminal justice reformers should focus on stopping crime instead of making reforms to the sentencing process.

"I'm afraid we don't have a sentencing problem, we have a crime problem. If we want to bring down our prison population then we should bring down crime," Sessions told a group of sheriffs in Oklahoma.

The remarks come on the heels of a letter written by law enforcement leaders urging him and President Trump to get on board with bipartisan criminal justice reform.

  1. I want criminals in prison. The purpose of prison is more to keep dangerous elements away from society, not punishment.

If we just wanted to "punish", then we'd torture/maim as punishment as is done in non-Christian polities today and in history. Partly why Christians don't torture is it corrupts the punisher.

(Partly also, the state punishes (via imprisonment) to prevent vigilante justice / feuding.)

Anyway, if US society quit telling blacks that others are to blame for their problems, they'd be less criminal. And if the government quit expanding the wealth gap, the US populace would be more contented. So, Sessions is correct.

We're always going to have crime, but at the least this society could stop encouraging crime.

White collar crime is another thing. This society tends to fear violent crime more, but fraud can be significant too.
