If a terrorist wanted to find the most vulnerable point in America’s airport network they could not have hoped for a better guide than what just happened at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson.
Just after 1 p.m. Sunday the whole airport, the world’s busiest, went dark for 11 hours. Thousands of flights were disrupted. For many hours nobody in authority attempted to explain—or even seemed able to explain—what had happened.
Just imagine this is a classic plan for phase one of a terrorist attack: Render the target blind. None of the defenses are operational. Thousands of people are trapped in restricted space without directions about how they can find an exit.
As chaos spreads nobody knows who turn to for information. The communications blackout is as complete as the power blackout.

Blacks run Atlanta and in time it will look like Detroit. Detroit had all the automakers until they moved on. Atlanta has Coke, Holiday Inn, and Delta...in time they will see the light and move on. ReplyDelete1. The Hartsfield Airport was the victim of a power outage.
2. The power outage was caused by an underground fire. It damaged two substations which, if undamaged, should have provided redundancy. Obviously Georgia Power will have to insure this does not reoccur.
3. Georgia Power is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Southern Company. It is a private enterprise, not public.
4. Terrorism is a threat to our entire infrastructure. Power grids, water supplies, food chain, petroleum, etc. The dangers are well known. Unfortunately it's hard to stop a determined individual. The good news is that so far no one has been determined enough and smart enough to do significant damage.
5. A snowflake at the airport was interviewed. She said the power outage was the worst experience of her life. Some people actually slept on the floor. How terrible.
The threat to our infrastructure is real, but what makes it a concern is the inability of people to cope. What happened at Hartsfield was a major inconvenience. It wasn't life threatening.

ReplyDeleteself contained power source.... i.e. Diesel Generators. Major Hub airports are a vital part of the nations economy and as such need to be prepared for such contingencies. This is more than a local failure....this is a failure on a grand scale as the Transportation Department should have long ago set standards and requirements to force airports and other critical transport modalities and locations to be prepared for things like this.

was allowed to take-off at 6:27 p.m. The plane had come in
from Mexico but not a Mexican plane. I wonder what the cargo
was.
