The owner of a Texas company that makes untraceable 3D-printed guns said Tuesday that he has begun selling the blueprints through his website to anyone who wants to make one, despite a federal court order barring him from posting the plans online.
Cody Wilson said at a news conference that he started selling the plans Tuesday morning and that he had already received nearly 400 orders. He said he’ll sell the plans for as little as a penny to anyone in the U.S. who wants them.

I always admit ignorance. I know almost nothing about these printed guns. And I understand only the government wants untraceable guns. I do however understand how guns work. Okay, maybe one of these plastic guns might be lethal, but I wouldn’t bet my life on it. They look to me like in order not to explode in your hand they have to make the barrel very short. From my admittedly lack of knowledge, they cannot produce enough pressure to power the bullet. The plastic barrel simply is not strong enough to give the projectile any serious kinetic energy. A muzzle velocity of what 150 -200 FPS. Somewhere around the speed of a golf ball. But a lot less mass and energy.
ReplyDeleteJust for some perspective. A 9mm with a 4.5-inch barrel requires 26,923 psi for a velocity of 1,100 ft/sec. For a 357 magnum and 6-inch barrel, it takes 33,601 psi for a velocity of 1250 ft/sec. I have no idea the pressure these printed plastic guns can withstand but I’m positive it is no were close.
