A top adviser to President Bashar Assad is warning of "operations" against American troops guarding Syrian oil fields, saying the U.S. has "absolutely no right" to Syria's oil.
"It is our oil," Bouthaina Shaaban recently told NBC News, while warning of “popular opposition and operations against the American occupiers of our oil.”
President Trump announced in October that he would withdraw U.S. troops from northern Syria, saying he wanted to bring them home. He later approved a mission to secure oil fields in the country.
“He’s talking about stealing it,” Shaaban said, adding that Assad believes "our land should be totally and completely liberated from foreign occupiers, whether they are terrorists, or the Turks or the Americans.”

Why oh why are American soldiers occupying Syrian oil fields? For that matter, why are American soldiers in Syria in the first place? Did I miss the Congressional declaration of war with Syria? Heck, I even missed Syria attacking the U.S.? Can someone provide a link?
ReplyDeleteY'all have a nice day.
Links are strangely MIA......
DeleteWe never attacked Syria and we are not at war with Syria. Us forces are in Syria to fight against ISIS, under congressional declaration in 2015. ISIS had (HAD) territory in syria and that area was not governed by the syrian government. As isis was pushed out, Syrian Kurdish forces displaced them and established government in the area they occupy. A few thousand US forces assisted them. The US forces are on the oil fields to prevent Russian and Syrian troops from going into the Kurdish areas, now that ISIS is defeated (mostly). The oil allows the Syrian Kurds to finance a stable government in their zone and gives the Syrian government a good faith reason to negotiate with them instead of trying to wipe them out. You didn't know about this because you haven't been paying attention. I don't blame you. The national news media has been focused on Trump 24-7 for the past 4 years. They only ever talk about syria and kurds when they think it makes Trump look bad. "Trump abandons allies", Trump flip-flops and doesn't abandon allies", "Trump steals oil", etc.
ReplyDeleteIn 2018, the Russians sent a Russian mercenary company into the kurdish zone, thinking it would be an easy win (same oil area). U.S. forces massacred them. They won't try it again if US forces are anywhere nearby.
