CDC: Use of Cloth Face Coverings to Help Slow the Spread of COVID-19 & Sew and No Sew Instructions

Via Cousin John

Applying a face mask - step 1

How to Wear a Cloth Face Covering

Cloth face coverings should—
  • fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
  • be secured with ties or ear loops
  • include multiple layers of fabric
  • allow for breathing without restriction
  • be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape

CDC on Homemade Cloth Face Coverings

CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

  1. I have made 45 of the CDC mask pattern. I made 20, then revised the pattern from 8” wide to 10” wide. The 8” one was okay, but the revised pattern worked better I thought. Also I would recommend people making them with the ties as opposed to elastic because the elastic will stretch out and will not hold up to repeated washings with bleach added to the wash water. I used double side bias tape for my ties. I had everything in my fabric stash but when I went online I found bias tape and elastic was getting hard to find. If I HAD to, I could make my own bias tape.
Do you need masks Brock, I’ll send you a couple if you do.
    Take care,

    1. Thanks sweetie but I still have 2 though I could use one that goes around my throat since that is where I breathe. One thing for sure, you and hubby will never get the virus!

*If you're selling them then I believe I could move some if you like.

  2. Thanks Brock but I’m not selling them. I made them for my children, their spouses, and my grandchildren. One of my son in laws owns a grocery store and I made them for his employees. Of course for me and the husband. The husband refuses to wear one though (rolling eyes). If he gets it it will probably be fatal as he’s asthmatic, diabetic, and has had a quadruple bypass in the last six month. Thankfully Idaho isn’t a hot spot. I haven’t been to town for six weeks. Not that I care about that : )
Do you have any type of scarf you could use around your throat?

    1. Oh, my goodness he better take care of himself!

I wear an adhesive cotton *covering every day which would probably do as well unless I needed a N-95 and I never leave here if I can help it. My VA regular doctor will have a video appointment with me next week.
