Apple Wants Future iPhones to Read Your Face to Decide if You Are Depressed

Tech giant Apple is reportedly working on new technology that aims to help diagnose depression and cognitive decline in its users through facial recognition and other sensors built into its future devices.

The Wall Street Journal reports

that Apple is developing new technology that would use an array of sensor data including mobility, physical activity, sleep patterns, typing behavior, facial expressions, and more to diagnose depression and cognitive decline in users.

  1. I'm glad i have absolutely no interest in spending my own money on ANY Apple product.

If the one work forces me to get has a problem, that's on them.

  2. Uh huh. Who decides between 'depression' and 'perpetually pissed off'? And why stop there? Why wouldn't they develop a classification of facial expressions against which your expression shall be ranked?

Hey, it looks like you're angry. We think you are about to commit domestic abuse (we've been tracking your relationship - we see your spouse has made a large financial purchase and we note there was no previous discussion of the same). We've notified social workers and the police are on their way. Because we care.

  3. In the same manner that outward facing home security cameras are now used to track your movements in public, even if you didn't own an Apple product you could be tracked as you come into the field of view of that Apple product used by someone else. It is pedestrian to think big tech would limit themselves to only those who use their product.

While we're concerned about the ubiquity of street cameras put up by local governments, I think the larger threat is the devices used by the general public. Too, I think big tech has realized the gold in mining those privately owned devices which are in the public spaces.

Big tech is not restrained as much as governmental entities. In this, government is way behind the curve/dropped the ball. B-b-but they're private companies. Well, their sinister stratagems are not equal to nor superior to our natural rights.

  4. My only cell phone is an LG flipper that remains turned off in my car except for every 3 months when I have to spend $19.99 + tax to add 3 months of life-time and briefly recharge the battery or in the rare occasion if my car breaks down while on the road.

    3. If you're ready to join the 5G network, LG 5G phones, like the LG V50 ThinQ™ 5G, are equal to the task and offer incredible features designed to make life good. ... 5G coverage available in limited markets. Product features and performance may vary and are subject to network availability and connectivity.

      Not sure better contact them.

  5. The danger is that if and when the software is developed it will be one embedded in in updates on all platforms. Anybody who thinks it will be limited to looking for depression is an abject fool.

    2. You mean bringing them back with no strings attached -
just a plain simple phone with no tracking capabilities,
no apps, no video screen, etc.
I have an old TracFone with no sim card. It didn't work
where I live as none do but good for in town visits.
You think if I bought a minutes card I could get it up
      and running?

    3. If TracFone is still in business, I would contact them first. By the way, do you mind telling what you bought and where? (Pills)

    1. The Elavil (Amitriptyline)at 10mg may not be sufficient. I've been taking it since 1995 and I believe I was started at 25/50mg? but that is probably smart to see if the 10 will work. Same with the Stromectol 10 pills $41.95. I haven't bought yet. https://www.med4you.org/order:https,I don't see where to order.....?
