Chapecoense plane crashed when other aircraft in emergency was allowed to land first

Chapecoense players with pilot on the flight before the crash 28 November 2016
A little while later, Mr Upegui said, the pilots in the LaMia plane made one final plea before falling silent. The Avianca co-pilot said the air traffic controller’s voice broke and the crew of the Avianca plane began to cry.

The plane carrying Brazilian football team Chapecoense crashed after it was denied the opportunity to land because another plane had already started an emergency descent, according to a leaked audio message which described the emotional last moments of the flight.

The short haul aircraft, operated by charter airline LaMia, was carrying the team to the Colombian city of Medellin, where they were due to play local team Atletico Nacional in the Sudamerica Cup final.

But the plane never reached its destination. It crashed in the east of Colombia’s Antioquia department, killing 71 and leaving just six survivors, including three members of the Chapecoense team.

It emerged on Wednesday that when the LaMia plane ran into trouble, another aircraft had already communicated with the airport that it needed to land as a preventative measure.

    3. Wish I had as I would be through the 25 hour ordeal airport to airport. Although house to house adds on another 10 and then it's best not to try and nap, but keep going until night time, but then you're still not back to normal for a few days.:) My 18th time I believe.

    1. 25 hours is about the fastest you'll get from the east coast as it is halfway round the world. Plus you have two connecting flights with waits at each airport. 1 1/2 hour in Tapei which is OK, but 2 /12 in NYC isn't.:(

I leave Cape Carteret 3 hours in advance to get to RDU 2 hours before the plane takes off just to be sure. Actually it won't be 5 hours in Saigon but might be by the time you get checked it, your stuff unpacked, changed money bought beer, etc. :)

    2. I just checked and it showed that United and Air Vetnam had direct flights from NY and NJ at 19 1/2 and almost 20 hours but they must have been discontinued, so I imagine they were pricey. Now if Trump would let me borrow his airplane.............:)
