About Dissident Mama
Truth warrior, Jesus follower, wife, and boy mom. Apologetics practitioner for Christianity, the Southern tradition, homeschooling, and freedom. Celebrating Might Makes Right, BATTLE HYMN OF THE REPUBLIC |
The Battle Hymn Of The Republic Unmasked |
Social activist Julia Ward wrote “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” in 1861, the same year that Henry Timrod composed his “Ethnogenesis” (the poem which kicked off part 2
of this series). In it, she penned that God will use His “terrible
swift sword” to bring judgment upon “condemners” and “crush the serpent
with his heel.” The wicked this New Yorker wanted to vanquish was, of
course, the Southern people.
Howe, the daughter of a Wall Street Banker and Calvinist-turned-Unitarian, saw the Northern cause as a holy war – the Yankees’ manifest destiny – and the Union as the army of God, whose cannons rained hellfire upon a peaceful people. Or God’s “fiery gospel writ in rows of burnished steel,” as Howe liked to call these weapons of conquest. “Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!” so goes the refrain.

Thank you, Brock, for posting that painting!
ReplyDeleteI researched it and found it is called, "MANIFEST DESTINY", and then found a high resolution copy which I downloaded onto my hard drive, and also posted on my FLICKR account.
When looking for the "MANIFEST DESTINY" painting, I discovered another painting, "WESTWARD THE COURSE OF EMPIRE TAKES ITS WAY", also known as, "WESTWARD HO!".
That painting, too, I copied, downloaded, and posted the high resolution version.
I do wish that when you posted a painting, that, if possible, you would include the name of it, the identity of the artist, and a link to the version with the highest resolution.
Great!

My foggy mind remembers that you asked this of me before.......:( Maybe I'll remember next time! :)
Hi Brock,
ReplyDeleteConsidering this "Revelation!!" ...Funny how that goes.. so the "Juli Bitch" only sees me... a "Southerner' as a "Snake!!" ...I am tempted to get "Freudian" and view her "perception" as a fear of "the male 'member'.. 5 'll get ya' 10 she died a "Virgin!!" .."Get my drift??"...meanwhile, back at the ranch... Oh!, that's right... that damned song!!! Well, I can only come back with a serious "Rebel Yell!!!" .... Now, on a serious note, all is not lost!!!! For it seems that the "US ARMY AIRBORNE PARATROOPS" have taken the tune sans lyrics of "That song!!" and added their own words.....!!! Zoooom,Zooooom,Zoooom!!!..
'Oh He was just a rookie trooper and he surely shook with fright,
They stood him up, checked his gear and made sure his pack was tight,
He jumped into that 'Icy Blast!!!" his Static line un-hooked, and 'He Ain't Gonna' Jump No More!!!!!!!"
Now ya; gota' find the "Happiness heros" "WWII Veteran Leads Blood on the Risers!!" 101st Airborne Div. member Vince Speranze "Leads" the song!!!!!!!!! Go to my home page on FB "Bill Deli" and it's the second or so post.... saves ya' the search!! Check it out and give me a report...
Vince does the "Long version!!" WWII original.. there have been several "Modifications" and "Us Skydivers" have adopted the song of "Our Brothers in Silk" too!!!!
Hope you can find "'Ol Vince"... his left hand is holding his Cigar and walking cane(we acquire one of those after a few "Crash and Burn" Landings under our "Trusty Silkin' Steed!!"... At least we didn't BOUNCE!!!!!...................."YET."
Skybill.
PS And "Member in Good Standing" with the Benevolent Brother Hood of "AIR TRASH!!" and i am the head Honcho of the regional sector called "DIXIE TRASH!!!!!!!!" (Long story I'll have ta' tell ya' over some good Bourbon sometimes!!)
PPS When ya' take something that a particular group holds "Sacred" and make a "Farce" out of it.... their whole trip is BLOWN!!!
I would cringe every time that song was sung at church, from the hymnal, at a conservative Baptist church in Ohio, which I was a member of some short years ago.
ReplyDeleteI would close the hymnal and not sing it.
I read the words and realized Julia Ward Howe was nuts. Prime crazy lady.
I think most people who sing it haven't really examined the words, and are just singing word sounds.
The lyrics are insane visions of divinely guided statism.
Calvinist turned Unitarian...that explains a lot, don't have to believe in anything Christian to qualify.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
