The Original Steel Magnolia

 mary chesnut

Mary Boykin Chesnut’s diary is a touching human and intimate history of a civilization locked in a struggle for life or death. Out of respect to her, and to preserve the authenticity of her experience, I have striven to let her speak in her own words as much as possible.

From the spring of 1861 to the summer of 1865, Mary Boykin Chesnut wrote what would become the greatest diary of the War of Southern Independence. Born in 1823, Mary was a member of some of the most powerful and prestigious families in South Carolina. “My father was a South Carolina nullifier, governor of the state at the time of the nullification row, and then a U.S. Senator,” explained Mary. “So I was of necessity a rebel born.” Mary described her father-in-law, James Chesnut, Sr., owner of one of the largest plantations in South Carolina, as “the last of the lordly planters who ruled this Southern world.” Mary’s husband, James Chesnut, Jr., was a U.S. Senator up until the secession of South Carolina, after which he served as a high- ranking Confederate official. Before the war, Mary lived in Washington, D.C., with her husband. During the war, she traveled across the South, including Montgomery, Charleston, Columbia, and Richmond. From her vantage point at the top of Southern society, Mary was privileged with special insight into the innermost workings of the newborn Confederacy.

Liberal students, colleges should learn from Liberty University's civility

Liberal students, colleges should learn from Liberty University's civility

Commencement day — a time for colleges and universities to impart one final lesson on their graduates.

For my alma mater, Liberty University, the world’s largest evangelical Christian school and a bastion of conservatism, that lesson will come from former liberal U.S. President Jimmy Carter on Saturday, May 19.

Unlike many supposedly apolitical universities, Liberty is unapologetic about its conservative views. Its doctrinal statement declares an “absolute repudiation of political correctness and a strong commitment to political conservatism.” Arguably, the school has nothing to prove but everything to gain by inviting a liberal speaker.

Iranian Regime Threatens to Release Names of Western Officials Who Took Bribes to Pass Nuke Deal

Via Billy

H.J.Ansari Zarif’s senior advisor: “If Europeans stop trading with Iran and don’t put pressure on US then we will reveal which western politicians and how much money they had received during nuclear negotiations to make happen.”

That would be interesting.

Earlier this week President Trump withdrew from the sham Iranian nuclear deal. President Trump knew the deal with the Iranian mullahs was not working.

This was despite former Secretary of State John Kerry working against the Trump administration to salvage the weak deal with the Iranian regime.
On Saturday John Kerry was spotted at a meeting with Iranian officials in Paris, France.

Of course, the Iranian regime is very upset with President Trump’s decision.

Now this…

Grassley pushes DOJ for answers on Flynn interview, cites 'apparent contradiction' by Comey

Is this Phony Witch Hunt going to go on even longer so it wrongfully impacts the Mid-Term Elections, which is what the Democrats always intended? Republicans better get tough and smart before it is too late!

The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee wrote Friday to the FBI and Department of Justice, pushing the agencies for answers about the interview of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, citing an “apparently contradiction” between what former FBI Director James Comey said to the committee, and what he has said since.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, sent the letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, saying that in a March 2017 briefing, Comey told lawmakers that “the agents saw no change in his demeanor or tone that would say [Flynn] was being untruthful” about the contents of a call with the then-Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. According to committee staff, Comey also said that the FBI agents “saw nothing that led them to believe [he was] lying.”

When *Maj. Gen. William Westmoreland took command of the 101st Airborne in 1958, he noticed a severe lack of proficiency in small-unit tactics and patrolling.

So he immediately created a school to fix the problem.

When he took command of all American forces in the Vietnam War, he once again created a school to teach long-range patrolling and small unit tactics with a Ranger-qualified cadre of instructors from the 5th Special Forces Group. To graduate from this school, you had to bet your life on it.

William Bennett: George Will scorns Pence for the high crime of decency

Image result for William Bennett: George Will scorns Pence for the high crime of decency

Conservative syndicated columnist George Will wrote this week that Vice President Mike Pence has “become America’s most repulsive pubic figure.” Why does Will think Pence deserves this absurd slur? Apparently, the columnist has found the vice president guilty of the heinous crime of being a decent man.

Will announced in 2016 that he was leaving the Republican Party over the nomination of Donald Trump as the GOP’s presidential candidate. So it is no surprise that Will has become part of the so-called “resistance” to the duly elected president of the United States. He’s even become a contributor to NBC and its liberal sister news channel, MSNBC, using this as a forum to criticize both President Trump and Vice President Pence.

Abraham Lincoln museum may sell artifacts to pay debts

A pair of blood-stained leather gloves President Abraham Lincoln was wearing the night of his assassination. They were displayed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. File Photo.

Awwww

When the state first moved to buy the worn stovepipe hat more than a decade ago, one historian marveled that it was “so emblematic of Lincoln” that “people would go crazy for something like that.”

But years later, the authenticity of the beaver-fur top hat was called into question in a series of articles in the Chicago Sun-Times with experts questioning whether it could be proven that it ever belonged to Lincoln — and whether it was worth the purported $6.5 million paid for it..

SLAVERY in MASSACHUSETTS

Via Billy

Massachusetts was the first slave-holding colony in New England, though the exact beginning of black slavery in what became Massachusetts cannot be dated exactly. Slavery there is said to have predated the settlement of Massachusetts Bay colony in 1629, and circumstantial evidence gives a date of 1624-1629 for the first slaves. "Samuel Maverick, apparently New England's first slaveholder, arrived in Massachusetts in 1624 and, according to [John Gorham] Palfrey, owned two Negroes before John Winthrop, who later became governor of the colony, arrived in 1630."[1]

Senator Grassley appears to be preparing to bust the frame-up of General Flynn

The killer bombshell is the final paragraph, in which Grassley at long last reveals the name of the other FBI agent present when Peter Strzok interviewed General Flynn about his conversation with Russian ambassador Kislyak and requests an interview with him by committee staff members:
[P]lease make Special Agent Joe Pientka available for a transcribed interview with Committee staff no later than one week following the production of the requested documents[.]

Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa, the laconic Midwesterner with a steel trap mind, dropped a bombshell yesterday with a letter (the full letter appears below – pdf here) to Deputy A.G. Rod Rosenstein (who supervises the Mueller probe) and FBI director Christopher Wray.  But in keeping with Grassley's style, which has so often misled his opponents into overconfidence, you have to read between the lines to see where he is heading.

The end point: uncovering the plot to frame General Flynn for lying to the FBI, including likely criminal acts by senior members of the FBI.

Recall that facing financial ruin, and threats to prosecute his son on unrelated charges, General Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI, yet James Comey told the Grassley Committee in a briefing:

So Conservative: Kemp for Georgia Governor

Justice Department, DHS team up to stop US companies from favoring foreign workers

The Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security entered into an agreement Friday aimed at stopping U.S. companies from favoring foreign workers with visas over U.S. workers, according to documents first obtained by the Washington Examiner.

Justice and Homeland Security officials hope the tighter union, made official Friday through a memorandum of understanding, leads to quicker detection of U.S. employers who discriminate against U.S. workers, as well as quicker punishment for immigrants who abuse or commit fraud in the process.

California Bill Wants To Drop Washington/Lincoln’s Birthday And Replace It With Communist Holiday [VIDEO]

The California Assembly discussed Thursday a bill that would replace Abraham Lincoln or George Washington’s birthday with International Socialist Workers’ Day as a paid holiday.

California Democrat Assemblyman Miguel Santiago introduced Bill AB-3042, which would allow schools to replace Washington Day and Lincoln Day with Presidents’ Day and install an “International Workers’ Day” — conventionally known as “May Day” — as a second holiday.

“I’m aghast that a bill like this would be able to get through committee,” California Republican Assemblyman Matthew Harper said to the Assembly. “Are we in competition to be the laughing stock of the United States?”

There's a government program that rewards American employers for not hiring American college grads — for hiring foreign alumni instead — by draining about $2 billion a year from the government trust funds for the elderly (Medicare and Social Security) to pay those employers.

It is the Optional Practical Training program.
