NC: Same-sex marriage applicants test county

Via Michael

For years, Mitch Fortune and Jake Crouch have been prevented from getting married by laws making same-sex marriage illegal in North Carolina.

So when they heard the county's top record-keeper was going to accept same-sex marriage license requests Tuesday, they headed to his office. With his action, Buncombe County Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger became one of the first officials in the South to take such applications from same-sex couples.

"This is a big step," said Crouch, 29, a climatologist who works for the federal government.
Thirty-four-year-old Fortune agreed, adding that they had been discussing marriage for much of their 7-year relationship. They bought a house together in Asheville three years ago.

"I'd like to see this happen soon," he said.

Reisinger accepted marriage license requests from 10 same-sex couples on Tuesday, despite a 2012 amendment to the state constitution forbidding such marriages.

Reisinger said he will hold the licenses and ask state Attorney General Roy Cooper for legal advice. Reisinger said he believes the state's ban is unconstitutional.

The White House In Shutdown: First Lady Michelle Obama's Kitchen Garden Is Wrecked

Via Bill

Photos: The showcase plot is filled with unharvested vegetables and weeds, and wildlife running amok...

Washington, DC - The first government shutdown in seventeen years has had a dramatic impact on First Lady Michelle Obama's world-famous Kitchen Garden on the South Lawn, currently bursting with more than thirty kinds of vegetables, including Presidential pumpkins awaiting harvest just in time for Halloween.  (Above, Mrs. Obama in the garden in happier days)

In the eleven days since the shutdown began on Oct. 1, the pounds and pounds of ripe organic bounty have gone to waste.  The vegetables filling the 1,500 square-foot plot are now rotting away on the vines and in the boxed beds, thanks to the mandate for "minimal maintenance" placed on the skeletal crew of National Park Service gardeners who remain on duty at 1600 Penn.

Breathtaking Tribute to a Fallen Farmer

Via southwind

Recently, we got the most amazing note, from a photographer named Matt Rubel, with a link to some pictures from an unusual memorial to a young farmer in Illinois. We asked Matt for the right to publish his photos and for an explanation of the event, pasted below.

My mother’s family is from a small farming community near Champaign, Illinois.  Though I grew up a Navy kid and lived all over the world, I always loved coming to the farm.  As a child, I was fascinated by my grandfather’s tractors and farm equipment.  If my brother and I were lucky, we would catch Grandpa early enough during the harvest or planting season and be allowed to ride in the tractor.  They’ve always been a very tangible symbol of farming to me.

Defending the Second Amendment

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2011/12/23/opinion/23egan-img/23egan-img-blog427.jpg

WASHINGTON, D.C. - I do not need to tell you that the Obama administration is doing everything it can to take away our Second Amendment rights.  You may have heard that the president recently signed the United Nations (UN) Arms Trade Treaty, which would seriously impact the right to own a gun in the United States.  This UN treaty does not recognize the individual right to own and operate a gun, paves the way for a national gun registry, and opens the door to additional gun sale regulations.  By signing it, the president has set a dangerous precedent for our nation.

In response to President Obama's troubling action, today I joined 179 of my colleagues from both parties in the House of Representatives in signing a letter stating that we will stand with the Senate in opposition to ratifying this treaty.  Furthermore, we will refuse to pass any legislation that would allow implementation or funding for the terms of the treaty.

President Obama's administration has an unfortunate history of violating the constitutional rights of American citizens, and this is no exception.  His assault on the Second Amendment is unacceptable.  Please know that I will continue my efforts in defense of your right to own and operate a gun in Eastern North Carolina.

NC: Morrisville considers (changing) state gun law

The Wicked Witch of the West

Mayor Jackie Holcombe said she isn’t pleased state legislators have expanded gun laws to allow permit holders to bring concealed weapons onto playgrounds, greenways and athletic fields.]

Holcombe is urging Morrisville town staff to review the new law, which went into effect Oct. 1, to see if there is room to restrict guns near children in public areas. The council is expected to vote on the revisions Oct. 22.

“I wanted staff to see if there are any options at all,” Holcombe said.

Under the state law, guns aren’t allowed during specific times such as cricket-league practices and soccer practices, she said. “But there is no similar option for parents who would like to use our playgrounds,” Holcombe said.

Soros behind group blocking buses deporting illegals

tucson-protest

Billionaire George Soros is a primary donor to the so-called immigrant-rights organization that has been blocking buses and carrying out other civil disobedience to block the deportation of illegal aliens, WND has learned.

On Friday, the National Day Laborers Organizing Network, or NDLON, carried out civil disobedience for hours in Tucson, Ariz. The protesters formed human circles around buses and even chained themselves to vehicles attempting to transport illegal aliens to the courthouse for processing.

Activists also reportedly blocked the entrance to the courthouse.

The protests reportedly prompted a federal court to shut down its deportation process known as Operation Streamline for the day. Operation Streamline is a Bush-era program that allows judges to review multiple cases at the same time to expedite the deportation of illegal aliens.

Abolition Crusade Ends in the Sword

 http://docsouth.unc.edu/church/jones/jonestp.jpg

A primary cause of secession was constant and irresponsible agitation by fanatical abolitionists who fomented slave rebellion.  A last straw for the South was the realization that prominent Northern leaders and Republican politicians had supplied John Brown with money and weapons as well as legal support after his capture. Not forthcoming from the abolitionists was a reasonable, peaceful and sincere solution to African slavery in this country.

Abolition Crusade Ends in the Sword:

Montevideo, Monday, November 7th, 1859

Rev. C.C. Jones to Mr. Charles C. Jones, Jr. (excerpt)

“The Harpers Ferry affair proves to be more serious than at first it appeared to be -- not in reference to the Negro population, for that had nothing to do with it; but in reference to the hostility of large numbers of men of all classes in the free States to the slaveholding States, even unto blood, and their readiness to aid and abet such attempts with counsels and money, and to employ reckless agents to carry them out.

There is a covert, cowardly, assassin-like heart in these men. Why do they not arm and come to the field in open day? From the tone of the abolition press in the free States, both secular and religious, there is great sympathy for the prisoners at Harpers Ferry. Some go so far as to justify the act, and only condemn the time and manner of it! The whole abolition crusade which has been preached for thirty years ends in the sword. The volunteering of counsel for the prisoners from the free States is another proof of sympathy in their crime, and an insult to the justice of the South.

Some of the papers friendly to the South hope that the South will be forbearing and magnanimous! Against the miserable lives of these men who have plotted arson, robbery, murder and treason over a vast portion of our country, who may weigh millions of property, millions of lives, the virtue, the order, the peace and happiness of our people, the majesty of the laws, the sacredness of religion, our constitution and our Union?

There is no place left for forbearance---no ground for compromises. The magnanimity of the South must not be exercised towards public criminals of the deepest dye, but towards herself in all her greatest and best interests, and towards our common country. Such sparks like these, struck to produce a universal conflagration, should be stamped out immediately. Such enemies should be met and overwhelmed without quarter in a moment.

If the conservative and loyal men of the free States, who we believe do now possess the power, are willing and ready to rule down this spirit of treasonable and violent aggression upon an unoffending and invaluable section of our country, we shall be most happy to see them do it.”

Equus Bass 770 is a restomod Mustang with ZR1 power

Roundabout via WiscoDave

Equus Automotive combines retro muscle car styling and a modern, 640-horsepower engine.

The Equus Bass 770 has gone viral, and it's not hard to see why. The retro styling of the boutique modern muscle car draws inspiration mainly from the old Ford Mustang fastback, but also the Dodge Challenger, and it's powered by a thoroughly modern supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that makes 640 horsepower, a la Chevrolet's recently departed Corvette ZR1.

It all comes together to give the Bass 770 a claimed 0-60 miles-per-hour time of 3.4 seconds and top speed of 200 mph, which makes us wonder why it took a short piece by Thrillist that ended up on the front page of Reddit to make people notice (including us). Apparently, the thing already has been out for almost a year, according to Equus Automotive's Facebook page.

Philly cop hassles, arrests open carrier with permit

A Keystone resident is stripped of his carry permit and firearm, detained and issued a city citation for possession of cutting weapons on a highway.

“The officer did not have the legal right to confiscate my firearm.  He also had no grounds to revoke my license to carry firearms,” said Edward Yealey, a professional audio engineer and production manager.

Yealey  said Oct. 8 at or around 11:30 a.m., he was standing outside a diner owned by a friend on Philadelphia’s East York Street, when he was approached by a city police officer concerning the .45 caliber Glock 30 he was open carrying.

“Instantly I turned the camera on, I had my arms crossed, so the phone is up in a good location. I don’t think he noticed it at first,” he said.

5.5 million vets get behind newest rally

Coalition blames Washington for targeting military members, families, survivors

Veterans have rallied against the federal government’s actions in Washington several times lately, including over the weekend when they carried barricades – some called them “barrycades” – over to the White House lawn where they dumped them.

So have bikers.

So have truckers.

But now, according to a report in the Army Times, a group representing about 5.5 million Americans – service members, veterans, retirees and their families – will be rallying on Tuesday.

It will happen, again, at the World War II Memorial, where members of Congress in recent days have helped take down barricades erected by the National Park Service to keep military veterans away from the open-air memorial that is in their honor.

The Army Times report said the rally will be “aimed at embarrassing Congress and the White House into action.”

It cites plans by the Military Coalition, which includes 33 different military and veterans organizations, to have a rally and news conference to call on Congress and the White House to make the decisions needed to get the government going.

The New Mascot for Obamacare: Fukuppy

Via WiscoDave

When we first reported to the world the incredible SNAFU that was the Obamacare Helpline number, the reaction was one of disbelief by most until they checked the details and realized that indeed 1-800-F U-CKYO was real. The question was raised, did the US government do any due diligence on anything realted to Obamacare at all? Well, now the Japanese are at it. Meet the newest mascot for Fukushima Industries... as Japan Today reports, this cute winged egg whose name is FUKUPPY.

In Japanese, pronounced "foo-koo-pii", unfortunately the english-speaking world may not see it that way... Does it not feel a little like the governments of the US and Japan are now openly mocking its people? Perhaps this should become the new mascot for Washington DC?

More than 100 North Carolinians have been killed by illegal aliens

Via NC Renegade

NC

Since Jan. 1, 2003, illegal aliens have killed 124 people across the state of North Carolina.

Most of these folks were killed in alcohol-fueled vehicle crashes; some were stabbed, beaten or shot to death; and one was strangled to death while she was being raped...

-On Jun. 3, 2010, Rene Pinto Melendez, 41, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, second-degree rape and larceny, in the grisly death of 48-year-old Patricia Denise Lamb.

Lamb died as a result of asphyxiation, according to the medical examiner.

After Melendez raped and strangled Lamb, he stole the victim's jewelry and cell phone, which later helped convict the Honduran national.

Sampson County Superior Court Judge Ripley Rand sentenced Melendez to 25 years in prison.

While many Americans have simply accepted such crimes as a sad fact of life in states such as Texas or Arizona, most would likely be surprised to discover the mounting death toll in North Carolina, a state far removed from the Mexican border.

Unfortunately, due to our federal government's unwillingness to actually secure the border and fully enforce our current immigration laws, the state of North Carolina has been transformed into a border state.

What follows is the list of those who have been killed in North Carolina by illegal aliens since 2003.

Man prevents bear from killing him by grabbing its tongue

Via Daily Timewaster

Grizzly Bear #122 feeding on a moose carcass. The picture was taken in April 2013.

The owner of a woodlot near Grand Falls N.B. told the CBC he’s lucky to be alive after a bear attacked him in the forest.

Gilles Cyr was out for a walk through his woodlot when suddenly a large black object ran out of the woods and attacked him. To prevent the bear from killing him, Cyr grabbed its tongue in a desperate bid for survival.

“When I opened up my eyes it was on top of me – with the friggin’ noise, it’s crazy the way it growls.
Right from the stomach. It’s not from the mouth, it’s just inside. His mouth was wide open right in front of my face so the last thing I remember I had his tongue in my hand and I didn’t want to let go because he was trying to fight me off. So he was hitting me with his claws, so I says, ‘If you’re going to hurt me, I’m going to hurt you too.’ So he was biting his tongue at the same time,” said Cyr.

Resistance Has Begun

Once again, we honor those who served their country, and world, seventy years ago

For the first time since the Tea Party element realized that something was seriously wrong in government, thereby becoming a part of the patriot/constitutionalist community, people were seen on the streets carrying something other than signs.  Though not quite on the level of rifles, or pitchforks, the idea that barricades could be returned to the White House, in protest of the childish actions of the Executive Branch of government, begins to show an advanced form of resistance to the misdeeds and shenanigans of government.
