Lincoln’s Lights

Free but Not Equal: The Midwest and the Negro During the Civil War ...

By capturing, confiscating and conscripting black men for his war effort, Lincoln greatly succeeded where earlier British emancipation efforts to thwart American independence failed.  Had Cornwallis won victory at Yorktown, would George III and Parliament have hung Jefferson, Franklin, Adams, Henry and the rest of American leadership, and rewarded black slaves with political rights and the land of rebels?

Lincoln was certainly appreciative of the black military labor gained from captured Southern territory, and depriving the South of agricultural workers which was the primary target of earlier British emancipation efforts in 1775 and 1814. At the same time Lincoln had to face political reality once the Southern armies and leadership were dispensed with, and the votes of his freedmen were required to insure permanent Republican party hegemony.

Southern Poets and Poems, Part IV

A Series by Clyde Wilson

The Battle of King’s Mountain

‘T was on a pleasant mountain
The Tory heathens lay,
With a doughty major at their head,
One Forguson, they say.

Cornwallis had detach’d him
A-thieving for to go,
And catch the Carolina men,
Or bring the rebels low.

The scamp had rang’d the country
In search of royal aid,
And with his owls, perched on high,
He taught them all his trade.

But ah! that fatal morning,
When Shelby brave drew near!
‘T is certainly a warning
That  ministers should hear.

And Campbell, and Cleveland,
And Colonel Sevier,
Each with a band of gallant men,
To Forguson appear.
Just as the sun was setting
Behind the western hills,
Just then our trusty rifles sent
A dose of leaden pills.

Up, up the steep together
Brave Williams led his troop,
And join’d by Winston, bold and true,
Disturb’d the Tory coop.

The royal slaves, the royal owls,
Flew high on every hand;
But soon they settled — gave a howl,
And quarter’d to Cleveland.

I would not tell the number
Of  Tories slain that day,
But surely it is certain
That none did run away.

For all that were a-living,
Were happy to give up;
So let us make thanksgiving,
And pass the bright tin-cup.

To all the brave regiments,
Let’s toast ’em for their health,
And may our good country
Have quietude and wealth.

“Give People Back Their G**damn Freedom”: Tesla CEO Elon Musk Slams “Fascist” Coronavirus Stay-At-Home Orders

Via Billy

Tesla CEO Elon Musk called the coronavirus lockdowns “fascist” and said that people are essentially under house arrest.
“This is not freedom,” Musk said during a Q1 Tesla earnings call.  “Give people back their goddamn freedom.

“The extension of the shelter-in-place, or as I will call it, forcibly imprisoning people in their homes against all their constitutional rights.  That might mean breaking people’s freedoms in ways that are horrible and wrong and not why people came to America or built this country.”

“What the f*ck,” Musk added. “It’s an outrage.”

Photos from Protest of Duncan Lemp Killing at MoCo Police ...

The Rutherford Institute is warning government officials not to weaponize the COVID-19 health crisis in order to justify carrying out surveillance on and retaliating against persons who exercise their First Amendment rights to publicly protest government misconduct in a manner consistent with “social distancing” guidelines. The Institute issued its warning after officials reportedly threatened a Maryland family with up to a year in jail and a $5000 fine if they attempt to publicly assemble and protest the murder of 21-year-old Duncan Lemp, a software engineer and Second Amendment advocate, who was gunned down in his bedroom during an early morning, no-knock SWAT team raid on his house.

Bellamy Mansion Slave Quarters

Slave Quarters 1990s
On the northeast corner of the lot stands the original brick slave quarters, a rare survival of a once important urban building type, and one of the best preserved examples in the country. Such buildings were generally referred to as servants’ quarters or “negro houses.” A March 1860 deed cited the John D. Bellamy “kitchen or negro house” at the corner of the Bellamy property. The neatly but plainly finished brick building typifies urban slave quarters in the late antebellum South—one room deep and three rooms wide, with stepped parapets rising above the roof and a windowless back wall along the property line.

BJ Baldwin of Baldwin Motorsports Involved in Justified Homicide in Las Vegas

Baldwin says he doesn’t hold a grudge against the man who attacked them.
“This person that I got into a gunfight with, his name is Joey and he’s not a bad person,” said Baldwin. “He just got caught up doing some bad stuff and I happened to be in his line of fire.”
“Think about that, okay. Somebody comes up to my girlfriend and putting a gun to my face, with no demands with what appeared to be the intent to kill, murder, rob. He has my respect.”
I think he's nuts

BJ Baldwin of Baldwin Motorsports has been cooperating with police after getting into a gunfight with an armed assailant. His attacker was killed in what police say was a justified self-defense shooting, according to KSNV News.

Baldwin and his girlfriend were having a meal in the parking lot of a local In-N-Out Burger when the couple was approached by two men. One of the men drew a gun on Baldwin’s girlfriend and opened fire.

Baldwin, who has a concealed-carry permit and was armed, returned fire while his girlfriend took cover. Police say at least 15 shots were fired in the ensuing shootout.

Cop Needs 17 Center Mass Hits w/ .40 S&W to Stop Assailant

 Kahr CT 40

We’re not trying to pick on the .40 S&W.  I swear.

It’s just coincidence that last week we came across a story about a woman’s breast implant deflecting a .40-caliber projectile and now, this week, we found another article detailing a head-turning situation involving the popular self-defense round.

Published in is a story called “Officer Down: The Peter Soulis Incident,” which ran back in February.

It details a harrowing gunfight where a wounded officer needed as many as 22 rounds of .40 to bring down an armed assailant — 17 of which struck center mass.

You should read the whole thing if you have a moment. But here is the gist from author Brian McKenna:

Michigan Doctor Says Coronavirus Similar to Flu, Calls for Lifted Restrictions

Via Terry

A Michigan doctor has published an open letter to the public and Michigan legislators, saying that the coronavirus is no worse than the common flu and that shelter-in-place orders and other treatments should be restricted by region and industry.

“All available data suggests the mortality rate of COVID-19 in the general population will approximate that of the seasonal flu in the long run,” said Dr. Rob Steele, a doctor of internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology and echocardiography. “It is the same patients in danger from either infection with similar hospitalization and mortality rates.  Seasonal influenza is dramatically more dangerous for those ages 2 and under than COVID.”
