Redeeming the Time

Picture it. A book store in Madison, Wisconsin, in the mid-’90s. Quite the unlikely place you’d expect to be exposed to the true history of the Pilgrims being totalitarian religionists, not the freedom-seeking refugees in funny hats, bonnets, and buckled-shoes we hear about in grade school.

This took place at a book signing and lecture, not given by a historian, but rather by LGBT activist Dan Savage, whose syndicated sex-advice column, Savage Love, was a favorite of mine back then.

Obviously, I was in the throes of my leftist degeneracy, so I dutifully drank in his half-truths of this seemingly fresh critique.

Debauchery and Puritanism are two sides of the same coin.”
Dr. Clyde Wilson

Even though Savage was excoriating the Puritans mostly for their chaste sexual mores, he was also perpetuating the myth that New England history is the whole of American history. You know, “Land of the Pilgrims’ pride” and all that. Savage was simply echoing the increasing mainstream narrative in oh-so puritanical fashion.

California Primary: Democrats Narrowly Avoid Shutout in Key House Races

Democrats managed to avoid being shut out of the general election in several key congressional races in the California primary on Tuesday, as their candidates finished second to Republicans, allowing them to qualify for the November ballot — barely.

California has a “top two” or “jungle” primary, in which all candidates from all parties compete in a common pool, and the first and second place finishers advance to the general election, regardless of party. That means two members of the same party can theoretically advance to the November contest, shutting out the other party.

Two history buffs debunk the story of a famous Civil War photo

Via Brother Henry

A few years ago, Paul Bolcik and Erik Davis stood on East Patrick Street in Frederick, Md., looking at a Civil War historical marker. On the plaque was one of the most famous images from that conflict: the only known candid photograph of Confederate soldiers on the march.

Reproduced in countless books, it shows nearly 100 men, most with rifles resting on their right shoulders, a few looking toward the camera, their faces inscrutable.

And to think it was taken on that very street in 1862!

Except, it wasn’t. In April, after three years of painstaking research, Bolcik and Davis revealed that the picture was actually taken around the corner in 1864.

The Justice Department's internal watchdog has concluded that James Comey defied authority at times during his tenure as FBI director, according to sources familiar with a draft report on the matter.

One source told ABC News that the draft report explicitly used the word "insubordinate" to describe Comey's behavior. Another source agreed with that characterization but could not confirm the use of the term.

In the draft report, Inspector General Michael Horowitz also rebuked former Attorney General Loretta Lynch for her handling of the federal investigation into Hillary Clinton's personal email server, the sources said.

George Soros-Backed District Attorney Candidate Loses Big in San Diego

Liberal billionaire George Soros was dealt a rare defeat in San Diego, Calif., as his preferred candidate for district attorney in that city's race was soundly defeated.

Summer Stephan, the current district attorney of San Diego County, won by 28 points. Stephan garnered 237,227 votes (64 percent) to Geneviéve Jones-Wright's 134,753 votes (36 percent).

Soros poured $1.5 million into the California Justice & Public Safety PAC, which was established by Whitney Tymas, a longtime Soros consultant, to bolster Jones-Wright, the Washington Free Beacon previously reported.

Obama-era license aimed to let Iran convert money in dollars

Via Billy & David

The Obama administration secretly sought to give Iran access — albeit briefly — to the U.S. financial system by sidestepping sanctions kept in place after the 2015 nuclear deal, despite repeatedly telling Congress and the public it had no plans to do so.

An investigation by Senate Republicans released Wednesday sheds light on the delicate balance the Obama administration sought to strike after the deal, as it worked to ensure Iran received its promised benefits without playing into the hands of the deal’s opponents. Amid a tense political climate, Iran hawks in the U.S., Israel and elsewhere argued that the United States was giving far too much to Tehran and that the windfall would be used to fund extremism and other troubling Iranian activity.

The report by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations revealed that under President Barack Obama, the Treasury Department issued a license in February 2016, never previously disclosed, that would have allowed Iran to convert $5.7 billion it held at a bank in Oman from Omani rials into euros by exchanging them first into U.S. dollars. If the Omani bank had allowed the exchange without such a license, it would have violated sanctions that bar Iran from transactions that touch the U.S. financial system.

The Unknown D-Day; The Marines’ Bloody Charge at Belleau Wood, June 6, 1918

U.S. Marine officers after the battle of Belleau Wood

Many Americans know that June 6 is the anniversary of World War II’s D-Day, the date when the United States invaded the beaches of Normandy in hopes of saving Europe from Hitler.

But far fewer know that June 6 is also the anniversary of another epic American battle that took place on French soil. One hundred years ago, during World War I, U.S. Marines attacked the German forces at Belleau Wood in order to save Paris and halt the Kaiser’s offensive. June 6, 1918, became the bloodiest day in the Corps’ history to that point, and Belleau Wood became an integral part of Marine lore.

French mayor calls for help as police are losing control over the city

The mayor of Toulon, Hubert Falco, has asked for police reinforcements after a “worrying outbreak of violence” in his city, France’s Var-Matin reports.

Falco asked France’s Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior for police backup after an escalating number of gang related shootings.

“At the moment, the police are depleted, but a public presence at night can be a deterrent. Of course we are worried about what has been happening at night in our cities for weeks. It happens in the cities, we listen to the people who live there, but we are not decision makers: Toulon must be helped,” the mayor says.

Primary results prove that Trump’s agenda is a smash hit

The results in Tuesday's primaries in eight states are an early indication that President Trump's "America First" agenda and accomplishments are winning the support of the American people. This is good news for Republicans running in the Nov. 6 midterm elections.

The Trump agenda of economic growth, job creation, border security, and peace through strength abroad is causing voters to seriously consider the consequences of supporting candidates who carry the Democratic mantle of tax hikes, protecting sanctuary cities, and the hyper-partisan and baseless impeachment witch hunt.

In California, it will be hard for Democrats to point to evidence that a blue wave is coming in November. In congressional districts 39, 45 and 48 – all key pieces of the puzzle for a Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives – Republican candidates received over 50 percent of the vote in the “jungle primary” system.

McCabe Seeks Immunity From Prosecution in Exchange For Testimony in Congressional Hearing

Sources are saying the IG report on the FBI’s 7th floor under Comey’s Directorship is absolutely damning and “worse than expected.”

In a letter sent to Chairman Grassley Monday, Andrew McCabe’s attorney Michael Bromwich requested the Senate Judiciary Committee grant the former FBI official immunity from prosecution in exchange for testifying at next week’s Congressional hearing on the FBI’s handling of the Clinton investigation.

Chuck Grassley requested Andrew McCabe testify next week at a Congressional hearing on the FBI’s and DOJ’s (mis)handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation.
In a 3 page letter to Chairman Grassley, McCabe’s attorney Michael Bromwich ironically complains about leaks from the DOJ doing damage to his client.

On page 2 of Bromwich’s letter, the lawyer argues destructive leaks about McCabe’s criminal referral by the IG have done damage to the former FBI Deputy Director.

Bromwich then states McCabe’s legal team requested an investigation into the DOJ’s source of leaks.
Oh the irony.
