Coal-state Dems chisel away at Obama climate plan

President Obama, in his weekly radio address, beseeched voters to get behind his climate change plan and punish politicians who don't.

He may want to be careful what he asks for. Several of those lawmakers come from the president's own party.

Coal-state Democrats have been as scathing as any Republican in reaction to the president's plan, unveiled Tuesday in a speech at Georgetown University. The pushback was almost immediate, and a glaring signal of the trouble Obama may encounter as he charges ahead with new restrictions on coal-fired power plants.

Though Obama technically is going around Congress by having the Environmental Protection Agency impose the rules, moderate Democrats made clear they will pressure the administration from inside the party to scale back. They carry a simple message: The regulations will kill jobs, but working with the coal industry to improve its own clean-coal technology won't.

West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, calling the president's plan a "war on America," delivered one of the most forceful rebuttals in an interview with Fox News.

Utah gun-rights group plans nation's first 'open carry' run

Running with scissors is generally considered a risky endeavor, but one group of Utah residents says running with a gun isn’t.

Organizers of the “Run 4 Guns” planned for this fall in Spanish Fork, Utah, are touting the event as the nation’s first open carry run.

The group is inviting runners to bring not only their tennis shoes and water bottles, but their gun holsters, as well.

Organizer Macgregor Whiting of Mapleton said the September 5K race, which was first reported by Salt Lake City Weekly, aims to celebrate Second Amendment rights and show that gun owners are responsible, normal people. In addition to the 3.1 mile race, they’ll have a half-mile “armed dash.”

ATF leader who oversaw botched sting will run Phoenix office

Via avordvet

The ATF leader who oversaw a botched undercover operation in Milwaukee will now be in charge of the agency's embattled Phoenix office, where agents allowed more than 2,000 guns to walk into the hands of suspected criminals through the infamous "Operation Fast and Furious."

Bernard "B.J." Zapor will be reunited in Phoenix with Fred Milanowski, another key figure in Milwaukee's "Operation Fearless," where a Journal Sentinel investigation found agents lost government guns, had their storefront ripped off and arrested at least four of the wrong people.

Zapor was in charge of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' St. Paul Field Division, which covers Wisconsin and three other states. In November, shortly after the Milwaukee sting was abruptly shut down, he was promoted to a position in Washington, D.C., supervising eight field divisions.

Officials from the ATF and the U.S. Department of Justice told congressional staffers in April that disciplinary action was under way against Zapor because of the Milwaukee operation. They won't say if Zapor's assignment to Phoenix is punishment.

Zapor has roots in Arizona. He started his career as an agent in Phoenix in 1989 and has family members living in that part of the country. Zapor will be able to retire when he turns 50, in two years. With its proximity to the Mexican border and population, Phoenix is a higher profile field division than St. Paul.

Zapor is well-known to Acting ATF Director B. Todd Jones, who continues to be U.S. attorney in St. Paul, where he and Zapor have served for several years. In August 2011, Zapor told the Star Tribune that Jones' appointment as acting director would "benefit public safety nationally."

U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) last week questioned putting Zapor in charge of Phoenix, given Zapor's "failed management of Operation Fearless."

"Why would you put him in charge of an office that so clearly needs good leadership?" Grassley wrote in questions to Jones. A vote on Jones' confirmation was delayed last week in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Arson and Treason at Milledgeville

Webster’s Dictionary of 1828 defined a traitor as one who “betrays his allegiance to his country” and “who aids an enemy in conquering his country.” Lt. Snelling (below) could not live among his own people in the postwar period, and his Northern friends would treat him as a suspicious and easily-bought alien if he lived among them.
Bernhard Thuersam, Chairman
North Carolina War Between the States Sesquicentennial Commission
"The Official Website of the North Carolina WBTS Sesquicentennial"

Arson and Treason at Milledgeville

Sunday, November 20, 1864 was a day of unprecedented excitement in the capital of Georgia. Members of the legislature had already departed in haste for their homes. The governor and Statehouse officers were in flight, and many citizens of the town were following the example set by them.  In the afternoon distant cannon fire was heard in the direction of Macon, some thirty miles away.

Just before sunset a small group of blue-coated cavalrymen were seen lingering on the outskirts of the town . . . They cut telegraph wires, seized a few horses, and then made a hurried exit.  They were the first of more than thirty thousand enemy soldiers who were to enter Milledgeville within the next four days.

With flags unfurled, the band at the head of the column playing the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and other martial airs . . . [the enemy army occupied the town and Sherman] learned that he was occupying a plantation belonging to General Howell Cobb and forthwith issued orders for its complete destruction.

On the same evening he ordered a special guard to protect the property of Andrew J. Banks whose farmhouse stood a short distance away. Banks, a North Carolinian by birth, was known to be of strong Unionist sentiment.

It is doubtful if Sherman’s intelligence channels had ever been more effective than on this particular occasion.  His knowledge of the country which he had entered, and of the varying sentiments of the inhabitants, he owed largely to David R. Snelling, the twenty-six year-old cavalry lieutenant who commanded his escort.  Snelling had been born a few miles from Cobb’s plantation and, until the war began, had always lived in the community to which he was now returning as a conquering enemy.

He had left the county early in 1862 as a member of Captain Richard Bonner’s company of the 57th Georgia Regiment.  Never an enthusiastic rebel, he deserted at Bridgeport, Alabama, in July.  Later he became a member of a Unionist regiment made up of defecting Southerners.  He was now a first lieutenant in the 1st Alabama (Union) Cavalry and assigned to Sherman’s personal escort where his knowledge of the people and of the country through which they were marching made his services invaluable to the commanding general who kept him close by his side.

While [Sherman and Snelling] were seated around the [evening] fire, a Negro slave . . . recognized Snelling and greeted him as “Massa Dave.”  According to [an observer], the slave fell on the floor, hugged the lieutenant around his knees, and expressed mixed feelings and astonishment and thankfulness at seeing his former master in the uniform of the invading army.  The slave who greeted him had belonged [to David Lester, Snelling’s] uncle, in whose home the lieutenant had lived as an orphan since boyhood.

That evening Sherman granted . . . Snelling’s request to ride six miles ahead to visit his relatives at the Lester plantation. In his memoirs, the general noted that Snelling returned that night on a fresh horse from his uncle’s stable [and that the visit had been] social in nature. The David Lester plantation book, however, indicates that Snelling was accompanied on his visit by a squad of Federal cavalrymen and the group conducted a raid on the plantation, burned the ginhouse, and pillaged the premises.

Whether Snelling’s unusual conduct was an attempt to prove his loyalty to the Union army or the result of an old grudge he bore against his affluent uncle perhaps may never be determined.”

BRIEF HISTORY

On May 17, 2001, The Friends of Forrest, Inc. filed a civil rights lawsuit against the mayor of Selma & the City of Selma in federal court in Mobile, Alabama for discriminating against our Southern heritage, Selma’s history, Alabama’s history & America’s history.  De! positions began on Feb. 27, 2003 & ended April 1, 2003 – court date was then slated for 12 Jan, 2004. However, on Aug. 17, 2003 Judge Brevard Hand dismissed the case. In the course of the following months, the enemy attorneys filed motions for the FOF, Inc. to pay the city’s legal fees & costs.  Judge Hand denied their motion & ruled in April 2004 that the City of Selma would be required to pay their own attorney fees & costs which exceeded over $200,000!  We consider this, within itself, a win!  The city of Selma paid over $200, 000 to deny her noble Southern Heritage!  This case has proven there is NO justice in these United States for white Southerners! Now, we are at WAR again with the City of Selma because of Selma’s local terrorist, Rose Sanders who has, after almost 12 years, once again waged war on the NBF monument & instigated the theft of the bronze NBF bust in Mar 2012. KTK Mining of VA, contracted by FOF & UDC to secure & develop Confederate Circle at Live Oak Cemetery has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Selma for U.S. Constitution violations of 1st & 14th Amendments – NO DUE PROCESS when the city council voted on 25 Sept 2012 to revoke our building permit. Court date is set for fall 2013.

What really angers me is the fact that most of the people really tripping about Deen’s past are from the North.

I am sure that it had to be hard for them. After all, it was clear that they were going to have to explain to their African American professor why going to Brixton was so uncomfortable. I had seen that look many times before. The search for the right words; the really right words that would convince both the teacher and their peers that their reactions were normal. I felt for them in that moment–knowing that they were facing a fear worse than being in Brixton–the fear of being perceived as a racist. They knew that if they said the wrong thing; used the wrong metaphor; emphasized the wrong syllable they would be marked forever, with the scarlet R that would make them outcasts–at least in our study abroad program. I wish I could have told them it was ok. I wish I could have told them to ‘be you’ and we will talk it out, interrogate it, and leave you to work it out. But I knew that if this ‘so-called’ group of ‘cool and informed college kids’ heard anything that sounded like an excuse based on race, these two students would be forever ostracized.

Now according to the party line, I was supposed to jump down these two students throats and explain to them the facts of historical racism and how they had been cultivated to fear anything with a skin color deeper than olive. I was supposed to hold up my fist, label them hate mongers; Fox Television disciples; and cast them into the utter darkness of a C- (these days anything below a B is considered the kiss of death amongst our grade sensitive co-eds). But I didn’t and I won’t.

When it comes to discussing race, progressives have little tolerance for intolerance–past or present. We throw labels around as easily as the Pharisees threw stones at adulterous women. How dare someone not have OUR enlightened view on the world!  How dare they not have been born with the innate view of justice, righteousness, and soul that we have!

Gettysburg at 150: Armistead at the High Tide

Via Billy

For my entire life, a letter has hung on the wall at the bottom of the steps of the old, elegant--but not grand--farm house where my mother grew up. The house sits on the western shoulder of Clark's Mountain in the heart of Virginia's Piedmont. Sitting on the porch looking west over the rock wall, you see why they are called the Blue Ridge Mountains.

And you can see why, after the unthinkable carnage of Gettysburg, General Robert E. Lee marched his men south, through all the enemy territory he had gained, past the Mason-Dixon, around the federal city and on southward to this very mountain. His men crossed the Rapidan River and took ramparts on the high bluffs along the southern bank of the river. When General U.S. Grant finally caught up, he found himself taking cover some ways above the river, beyond the flat plains of the north bank that left his men little more than target practice for Lee's sharpshooters.

Sometimes, watching smoky storm clouds slide across the purple background under a rolling barrage of thunder, I imagine that I am sitting in this exact spot 150 years ago, watching the fire and mortar blasts of a titanic battle and listening to distant cannon fire rumble along the valley and bounce off hillsides.

"For every Southern boy fourteen years old, not once but whenever he wants it is the instant when it is still not yet two o'clock on that July afternoon in 1863, the brigades are in position behind the rail fence, the guns are laid and ready in the woods and the furled flags are already loosened to break out and Pickett himself with his long oiled ringlets and his hat in one hand and his sword in the other looking up the hill waiting for Longstreet to give the word and it's all in the balance, it hasn't happened yet, it hasn't even begun yet, it not only hasn't begun yet but there is still time for it not to begin against that position and those circumstances which made more men than Garnett and Kemper and Armstead and Wilcox look grave yet it's going to begin, we all know that, we have come too far with too much at stake and that moment doesn't need even a fourteen year old boy to think this time.

Maybe this time with all this much to lose and all this much to gain: Pennsylvania, Maryland, the world, the golden dome of Washington itself to crown with desperate and unbelievable victory the desperate gamble, the cast made two years ago......"

Syrian Catholic priest Francois Murad killed last weekend by jihadi fighters was beheaded, according to a report by Catholic Online which is linking to video purportedly showing the brutal murder.

As TheBlaze reported last week, Murad, 49, was setting up a monastery in Gassanieh, northern Syria. Last Sunday, on the Christian leader’s Sabbath, extremist militants trying to topple President Bashar Assad breached the monastery and grabbed Murad.

While earlier reports suggested Murad may have been shot to death, Catholic Online reported Saturday: “The Vatican is confirming the death by beheading of Franciscan Father, Francois Murad, who was martyred by Syrian jihadists on June 23.”

New Washington Post PRISM Slides Reveal Number of Active Surveillance Targets

The Washington Post on Saturday published four new top-secret government slides with details about the National Security Agency program known as PRISM, including the number of individual surveillance targets being monitored in the database.

One slide, according to the Post, confirms the NSA’s ability to conduct real-time surveillance. The Post describes how “depending on the provider, the NSA may receive live notifications when a target logs on or sends an e-mail, or may monitor a voice, text or voice chat as it happens.”

The Center for Security Policy in Washington, D.C., and three of its employees have filed a motion for summary judgment in a lawsuit brought against them by the Council for Islamic-American Relations for their part in an undercover investigation exposing the Muslim group’s ties to the terrorist group Hamas and global jihad.

The American Freedom Law Center, which is representing CSP and its employees, said its brief “brings to light CAIR’s elaborate ties to terrorism; its abuse of tax codes and corporate law; and most shockingly, its deliberate deception to the federal government regarding both its use of shell-corporations and its dubious funding sources.”

“We absolutely object to the American intervention in our country and we demand the withdrawal, the American government to withdraw the ambassador – the ambassador from our country,” Yacoub said. “She is interfering badly. Wow did you ever think you would be spying on people just like you, up to and including family, friends and acquaintances of fellow freedom and liberty loving American patriots. Spying and gathering intelligence on 'The People' for 'the State', and their charge? They stand for what you used to.

It's all in the open now, all over the press, in almost every country around the world.

You can no longer shield yourself... "I was only following orders".

You cannot hide behind the banner ... "I didn't know".

They have been gathering information on ALL of us, including you, and using it for nefarious purposes. That is a fact admitted to by NUMEROUS Govt agencies.

They ARE gathering and storing the data IN DIRECT VIOLATION of the Bill of Rights and MANY international and domestic laws, it is no longer speculation... THEY, the People you work for and/or support, have admitted it... Openly!

You cannot deny that what you are doing now is UNCONSTITUTIONAL, Because your agencies have openly admitted it is. They have just found "routes" around the law or are "bending" the law for the "public safety and good"

Now is the time to stand to your Oaths... "to Protect and Defend" ... "from ALL enemies, foreign AND domestic"

Some of you have even sunk so low as to start targeting former and active service members (Mil and LE), people that stood exactly where you stand right now. You are targeting and turning over information on veterans who took the EXACT same Oath you took, and look where you stand now, feeding an ever growing and ravenous out-of-control State.

While you busy yourselves with that task, a thought to keep in mind; One day your "service" to the State will no longer be required, or your eyes may be "opened" and you become a liability, either way history shows that the State is more apt to 'disappear' potential problems, than let them go back to grazing with the sheeple.

So caution yourself; One day the worm will turn... Destiny, Fate, Karma... call it what you will, but in the end a tab will be collected.

We might as well put the Constitution out of its misery

Via WRSA

Wednesday, June 26, 2013 — just another day in a constitutional republic of limited government by citizen representatives:

First thing in the morning, Gregory Roseman, Deputy Director of Acquisitions (whatever that means), became the second IRS official to take the Fifth Amendment, after he was questioned about awarding the largest contract in IRS history, totaling some half a billion dollars, to his close friend Braulio Castillo, who qualified under a federal “set aside” program favoring disadvantaged groups — in this case, disabled veterans. For the purposes of federal contracting, Mr. Castillo is a “disabled veteran” because he twisted his ankle during a football game at the U.S. Military Academy prep school 27 years ago. How he overcame this crippling disability to win a half-billion-dollar IRS contract is the heartwarming stuff of an inspiring Lifetime TV movie.

Later in the day, Senator John Hoeven, Republican of North Dakota and alleged author of the Corker-Hoeven amendment to the immigration bill, went on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show and, in a remarkable interview, revealed to the world that he had absolutely no idea what was in the legislation he “wrote.” Rachel Jeantel, the endearingly disastrous star witness at the George Zimmerman trial, excused her inability to comprehend the letter she’d supposedly written to Trayvon Martin’s parents on the grounds that “I don’t read cursive.” Senator Hoeven doesn’t read legislative. For example, Section 5(b)(1):

How long will the people endure this tyranny of judges?

Via WRSA

America has become a government of, by, and for judges. It is hard to imagine a more hapless outcome for the people: the justices at once gave themselves authority to determine a case that they had no right to hear while denying standing to the people of California in another case, thereby giving the pols who put the people in that spot (by refusing to defend Proposition 8) an opening to impose a lower-court ruling on them.

The upshot of the rulings is that 5 judges have now imposed gay marriage on 300 million people. It is no longer a question of if that imposition will happen but when. As Justice Scalia pointed out in his dissent from the majority’s rejection of the Defense of Marriage Act, the Court has effectively taken the issue away from the people:
It takes real cheek for today’s majority to assure us, as it is going out the door, that a constitutional requirement to give formal recognition to same-sex marriage is not at issue here — when what has preceded that assurance is a lecture on how superior the majority’s moral judgment in favor of same-sex marriage is to the Congress’s hateful moral judgment against it. I promise you this: The only thing that will “confine” the Court’s holding is its sense of what it can get away with.

50 Years: Greenbrier Military School 1963's Class Reunion

Freshman picture. Damn, what happened......?:)

My name is Beaman Cummings and I am a member of the Greenbrier Military School  Class of 1963. I am trying to contact as many of my classmates as possible and also those who last attended GMS in 1963 as a PG or in any other grade.  It has been 50 years since we said good bye to the ‘brier and is time for us to gather in the Greenbrier Valley  to celebrate our youth and renew old friendships. The reunion will be held  17 to 20 October 2013. A complete listing of events will be mailed to you if the GMS Alumni Association has your correct address or you can find a listing of events posted on the gmsaa.org web site. Please make plans to attend , we would love to see you there. It is always a fun weekend with members from all GMS classes attending.

The 50 year  class is responsible for providing the officer positions at the retreat formation on the 18th of October in front of the flag pole.  I will need 1 Bn Commander, 5 Company Commanders, 2 Adjs and 4 for the flag folding detail. Please meet in front of the flag pole at 3 30 for a rehearsal. The formation with up to 200 reunion attendees will be at 4 45. The past two years the Greenbrier East High School Band has played at the formation and their Junior ROTC unit has provided a color guard for us dressed in GMS uniforms. We hope to have them back again this year. A picture of our class will be taken in front of the flag pole just prior to the retreat formation. Make sure you are there.

On Saturday morning during the General meeting of all the GMS Alumni at the Sharpe Center, all the members of our class who attend will be presented with 50 year GMS lapel pins. The Sharpe  Center is located where the old tennis courts used to be and our GMS museum is attached as part of the building. The 2 brass cannons that used to be on the front part of the campus, now guard the front door to our museum.  Additionally, the WW1 field gun that used to be chained to the flag pole is now part of a memorial plaza next to our museum.

Please make your plans to attend our 50th reunion. It only happens once in life. Do not let the moment slip away.  Come back to Lewisburg. You will be glad you did. For questions or information, call me at 508-835-3774(H) or 480-510-7989(Cell). Email is, beamancummings@charter.net
