Goths and Vandals in Florida

https://www.civilwarbookshop.com/pictures/81_2.jpg.JPG?v=1555018257

Captain J.J. Dickison, renowned for his fearless role in leading Florida’s “Cow Cavalry” during the war, is said to have always carried three revolvers – two in holsters and one on his saber belt. On more than one occasion after emptying his pistols and dashing up to an enemy cavalryman who was ordered to surrender, but refused to do, he would strike an unerring blow with his trusty saber.

Goths and Vandals in Florida

“Gainesville, Fla., August 19, 1864

The enemy’s cavalry [from Ohio and Massachusetts], reported to be four hundred strong, reached this place on the 17th, at four o’clock, a.m., with the view to sacking and burning the town. Upon their arrival, we had but one company of militia and a few citizens, who had assembled suddenly upon the emergency, under command of Judge Thomas F. King, to repel them.

Finding that they were unable, in consequence of the largely superior force, to successfully resist them, they retired . . . anxiously hoping for the arrival of our cavalry.

The enemy, or, at least a majority of them, were stationed at the railroad and depot, while the remaining began an indiscriminate robbery and plunder of the citizens of the town. Just in the midst of their thieving operations, and conduct such as would have been a disgrace even to the names and character of the Goths and Vandals, Captain [J.J.] Dickison . . . with his noble command, dashed in the town from nearly every direction.

When nearly opposite the residence of Colonel Dozier, Captain Dickison directed Lt. Bruton of the artillery, to open upon the enemy with the two pieces under his command. A portion of our cavalry then charged upon the enemy, and opened such a terrific fire upon them that they scampered through the town in every direction like a flock without a shepherd.

The fighting between our troops and the enemy then became indiscriminate and general. The Yankees tried to secret themselves in and under the houses in town, while many of them sought to remain near the ladies for protection, knowing full well our gallant men would not aim their trusty rifles at them thus situated.  Finding that they were completely hemmed in . . . a large number surrendered.

A number of the enemy, after being routed . . . started pell-mell on the road leading to Newnansville, where they were met by a detachment of militia cavalry, commanded by Captain Williams, who captured twenty-four of them.”

Captain Bill 'Hawk' Albracht saved more than 150 allied soldiers in daring escape

In October 1969, Army Captain Bill "Hawk" Albracht found himself posted at a base in Vietnamese jungle widely considered to be a backwater to the war. Surrounded by thousands of North Vietnamese soldiers, strapped for ammo and water, and with no hope of rescue, Albracht and his team of more than 150 American and South Vietnamese soldiers stared down communist forces armed to the teeth—with a slim chance of survival.

"My heart sunk," Albracht said recalling a message from command saying there would be no reinforcements. "I knew right then: We’ve got to get out of here, and we have to do it ourselves."

Is This How The Deep State Pays Off The Swamp?

Theories about how the deep state pays off RINO's and other establishment actors include money laundering through large book deals.

I have been thinking about this one for a couple of weeks now.

Seriously, I was in Target recently, and as I passed their book section I could see all the political books and autobiographies front and center on their shelves.

My thoughts?

Who the hell reads these things? I consider myself an avid reader, and I have NEVER picked up a politician’s latest book.

Why are these people getting $1 million books deals for books no one is going to read? I passed by those shelves and they were all stocked to the brim…..as in no one is reading them.

The dark night of fascism has finally landed in the United States

Via Billy

....In Basel, Switzerland was the latest European city to have a flash mob demanding freedom from masks and lockdowns.  You can read all about this Insurrection of Joy here.  Then, spend a few minutes watching this video from a Swiss train station, as people in the station go from bewildered to celebratory.

Tom Wolfe famously quipped, "The dark night of fascism is always descending in the United States and yet lands only in Europe."  Certainly, that was the case during the Trump presidency, when leftists insisted he was Hitler yet were unable to point to a single instance in which he'd engaged in conduct actually associated with fascists.  However, in the topsy-turvy world that is 2021, Wolfe's saying has been turned on its head.  With the advent of the Biden administration, America is heading into a purely fascist future.  Meanwhile, Europeans are insistently demanding freedom, whether it's generals and other civil servants pushing back against Critical Race Theory and Islam or ordinary people singing and dancing in the streets.

In America, people who committed a misdemeanor by entering the Capitol without permission are still rotting in jail in solitary confinement without ever having had a hearing.  The situation is so dire and un-American that Senators Elizabeth Warren and Dick Durbin, both proponents of total government, protested:

DeSantis Calls Systemic Racism ‘Horse Manure,’ Blasts ‘Very Harmful’ Critical Race Theory As ‘Race-Based’ Marxism

Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Thursday blasted accusations that the United States is systemically racist as “horse manure” and further said critical race theory is a race-based form of Marxism.

Asked to respond to the claim that America is “a systemically racist country,” DeSantis told Fox News host Laura Ingraham during a town hall that such a proposition is “a bunch of horse manure.”

The Real Pheidippides Story

 Via Mad Italian

Dean Karnazes You Don't Know Pheidippides wreath on head

I named my Whippet the same while in grade school, but imagine those today would draw a blank if mentioned his name.

Ultramarathoner Dean Karnazes visits his ancestral homeland for the truth about the original “marathoner.” Think you can handle it?

Many runners are familiar with the story surrounding the origins of the modern marathon. As the well-worn legend goes, after the badly outnumbered Greeks somehow managed to drive back the Persians who had invaded the coastal plain of Marathon, an Athenian messenger named Pheidippides was dispatched from the battlefield to Athens to deliver the news of Greek victory. After running about 25 miles to the Acropolis, he burst into the chambers and gallantly hailed his countrymen with “Nike! Nike! Nenikekiam” (“Victory! Victory! Rejoice, we conquer!”). And then he promptly collapsed from exhaustion and died. Turns out, however, the story is bigger than that. Much bigger.

The whole idea of recreating an ancient voyage was fantastic to me. Looking for an excuse to visit the country of my ancestors, I signed up for the little-known Spartathlon in 2014, an ultramarathon from Athens to Sparta that roughly follows the path of the real Pheidippides. It felt like the right way to tell his story—the actual story of the marathon. Here’s what I discovered:
