Repost 2012: Tu Sat (War Suicide) in Viet Nam

Капитан Фу
Captain Pham Van Phu. Probably taken the same year of his capture at Dien Bien Phu. His insignia is correct and he would have been 27.  He vowed never to be captured by the Communists again.

 Генерал майор Фам Ван Фу
General Pham Van Phu early April 1975.  He committed suicide April 30, 1975.

THE SUICIDES ON APRIL 30, 1975

To die for one’s country is not only an act of bravery, it is THE act of bravery. For soldiers, it is just an extension of their military career, a part of their duty. As leaders have asked their soldiers to sacrifice themselves for the good of the society, it is only right for leaders to go through the same motion. They should practice what they have preached.

As war is seen as a noble act, tu sat serves as redemption in case of defeat. It is also a way to tell the enemy: “You might have won the battle/war but you don’t deserve to win because you don’t have the chinh nghia (just cause).” And it is not only just cause: it is the moral belief that the cause they are fighting for deserves their total sacrifice.

Although tu sat or tuan tiet means war suicide, there is no good corresponding word in English because the act itself is not practiced in the Christian West. Secondly, the word suicide does not convey the moral and courageous implication of the act. It is a closer equivalent of hara kiri or seppuku (1). Although hara kiri is practically a disembowelment, its practice varies from person to person. If the blade is thrust deeply enough, it could cause an immediate death through arterial bleeding. If inserted superficially, the still-alive victim would be beheaded by the assistant. While tu sat and hara kiri are technically different, the end-result is the same: the death of the person through his own hand or the hands of an assistant.

Vietnam is one of the rare few countries in the world where leaders killed themselves when they lost a war. We will review these cases of tu sat during the pre- and anti-colonial wars and the anti-communist war.

Supping with Norman Lear

 norman-lear

Editor’s note: Norman Lear’s People for the American Way recently made a lot of noise about Donald Trump’s “hate speech.” Not much has changed in twenty years. This piece was originally published in in First Quarter, 1995 issue of Southern Partisan magazine.

The Associated Press reports that 17 groups, all combatants in the “culture war,” have come together and agreed on a set of rules to follow in the struggle for the soul of the nation. The groups, according to the AP, include everyone “from the conservative Christian Coalition to the liberal People for the American Way;” and they have “pledged to work to solve disputes before they become lawsuits, improve communication and respect each other’s positions.”

A spokesman for the National Association of Evangelicals was quoted as saying, “This is not easy.

But it is a first step.”

A first step toward what? This could have been a line from Faust.

UVA Professors ask President Sullivan to stop quoting Jefferson

Several groups on Grounds collaborated to write a letter to University President Teresa Sullivan against the inclusion of a Thomas Jefferson quote in her post-election email Nov. 9.

In the email, Sullivan encouraged students to unite in the wake of contentious results, arguing that University students have the responsibility of creating the future they want for themselves.

“Thomas Jefferson wrote to a friend that University of Virginia students ‘are not of ordinary significance only: they are exactly the persons who are to succeed to the government of our country, and to rule its future enmities, its friendships and fortunes,’” Sullivan said in the email. “I encourage today’s U.Va. students to embrace that responsibility.”

The Tulsa Fox affiliate did a helpful addition to their traffic report. After talking about the traffic in Tulsa, the host answered a “special request.”

The special request was this: Help Liberals figure out the way from Oklahoma to Canada.

Complete with a mapped route and tips about living in Canada, he gave Liberals what they need to move to Canada.

Michelle Obama: An “ape in heels.”

The director of a West Virginia development group and a mayor are facing backlash after a Facebook post described first lady Michelle Obama as an “ape in heels.”

The original post came from Clay County Development Corporation director Pamela Taylor in response to Donald Trump’s presidential win last week.

“It will be refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady in the White House. I’m tired of seeing a Ape in heels,” Ms. Taylor wrote.

Clay Mayor Beverly Whaling then responded to the post, writing, “Just made my day Pam.”

PacketSled Puts CEO on Administrative Leave After He Threatens to Take Out Trump with a Sniper Rifle

The security firm PacketSled announced on Sunday that it has put its CEO on administrative leave after he threatened to take out President-elect Donald Trump with a sniper rifle. PacketSled defines itself as "a disruptive security company focused on detection, response, and continuous monitoring of advanced threats."

Ironically, some Trump supporters on Reddit caught PacketSled CEO Matt Harrigan making some fairly disturbing "advanced threats" of his own on the night of the election:

"I'm going to kill the president. Elect," Harrigan declared on Facebook.

Republicans call on Clinton, Obama to reel in Soros-linked ‘professional’ anti-Trump protesters

Hundreds of arrests follow vandalism, blocked roads, fires; one protester shot

After five days of anti-Trump protests and mayhem led by left-wing groups, including one linked to top Clinton donor George Soros, Republicans said Sunday that it’s time for Democrats to call off the dogs.

Kellyanne Conway, Republican president-elect Donald Trump’s campaign manager, urged President Obama, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders to use their influence to talk down those she described as “professional” agitators “masquerading as protesters.”

“I think that the President of the United States, Secretary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, perhaps, others can come forward and ask for calm and ask for a peaceful transition and ask their supporters, which are masquerading as protesters now — many of them professional and paid by the way, I’m sure — ask them to give this man a chance so that this country can flourish,” Ms. Conway said on Fox News Sunday.

The far-left ANSWER Coalition and Socialist Alternative rushed to organize protest marches in major U.S. cities within hours of Mr. Trump’s presidential victory Tuesday, as did MoveOn.org, which has reportedly received funding from Mr. Soros, a billionaire.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Sunday that protesters recently spotted him and began banging on his car.

Trump adviser says military needs counterrevolution, reverse social engineering policies

Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, disagree on some of the Obama administration's policies for the military. Rep. Duncan Hunter is calling for a reversal of women in the infantry, open transgender troops and the near-banishment of the word "man" in titles. (Associated Press)

A key congressional supporter of Donald Trump says the president-elect’s defense secretary should move quickly to reverse a number of social engineering policies adopted in the Obama years that “have cut down on the warrior mentality.”

Rep. Duncan Hunter, California Republican, told The Washington Times that the armed forces need a counterrevolution. It should reverse at least three policies: women in the infantry, open transgender troops and the near-banishment of the word “man” from Navy and Marine Corps titles.

Mr. Hunter, a high-profile member of House Armed Services Committee, was one of the first in Congress to back Mr. Trump. He co-chaired the New York real estate magnate’s congressional leadership committee and promoted Mr. Trump in op-eds and media interviews.

The Trump transition team is considering Mr. Hunter for Navy secretary or even secretary of defense, a huge steppingstone for a 39-year-old former Marine Corps major.

Here is Mr. Hunter’s Pentagon agenda:

'Tolerant' educators exile Trump voters from campus

Via Jeffery

With puppies, Play-doh and coloring books, safe spaces and therapy sessions turn universities into a joke.

One of the more amusing bits of fallout from last week’s election has been the safe-space response of many colleges and universities to the election of the “wrong” candidate. But on closer examination, this response isn’t really amusing. In fact, it’s downright mean.

Trump’s substantial victory, when most progressives expected a Hillary landslide, came as a shock to many. That shock seems to have been multiplied in academe, where few people seem to know any Trump supporters — or, at least, any Trump supporters who’ll admit to it.

The response to the shock has been to turn campuses into kindergarten. The University of Michigan Law School announced a ”post-election self-care” event with “food and play,” including “coloring sheets, play dough [sic], positive card-making, Legos and bubbles with your fellow law students.”

(Embarrassed by the attention, UM Law scrubbed the announcement from its website, perhaps concerned that people would wonder if its graduates would require Legos and bubbles in the event of stressful litigation.)

This Trump Economic Advisor Wants America to Go Back to the Gold Standard

Via Frank

Q&A with Dr. Judy Shelton, the only female economist advising the campaign.

Donald Trump is no policy wonk.

He is pitching himself as the best man for the presidency based on his track record as businessman, and his ability to surround himself with the “best” people—not on his knack for writing white papers. This, of course, means that it is important for voters to understand whom he is surrounding himself with, and what sort of ideas they hold.

With this in mind, Fortune reached out to Dr. Judy Shelton, one of two economists recently named to Donald Trump’s economic advisory team, and the only woman to hold that title. Shelton is a senior fellow and co-director of the Atlas Sound Money Project, whose mission is to promote the principles of sound money and raise awareness of what they see as the inherent problems of our current monetary system. Dr. Shelton first rose to prominence when she predicted the economic collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989, two years before it transpired.

Democrats Are Now Calling For A ‘Revolution In The Streets’

Via Billy

anti-trump-protest-photo-by-fibonacci-blue

The surprise victory by Donald Trump on November 8th has spawned a series of violent protests and riots all over the nation as stunned leftists continue to throw the largest post-election temper tantrum in U.S. history.  Protesters in large cities all across America have been disrupting public transportation, looting stores, hurling objects at the police and burning Trump in effigy.  There have even been shootings at anti-Trump rallies in Seattle and in Portland.  Hundreds of protesters have been arrested so far, and organizers are promising that this is only just the beginning.  Meanwhile, large numbers of enraged leftists are physically threatening Trump on Twitter, and some are even calling for a violent revolution.  Sadly, I believe that they are quite serious about this.

Even some big celebrity names are starting to use the word “revolution” in messages to their followers.  On Twitter, Katy Perry has ominously warned that “the revolution is coming“, and comedian Sarah Silverman has boldly declared that “Trump gets a chance to hear us (or else we R them) If he fails REVOLUTION IN THE STREETS."

Of course other leftists are seeking less violent ways to oppose Trump.  There is a major push to use the electoral college to block a Trump presidency, if that fails there are many hoping to immediately impeach Trump once he takes office, and other activists such as former Labor Secretary Robert Reich are calling for a new third party if their planned post-election takeover of the Democratic Party is not successful.

But for many on the radical left the time for patience is over.

Why President Trump Will Fumigate The Fed

Via Frank

Image result for ron paul end the fed

Starting in January, President-elect Donald Trump will have a unique opportunity to pack the Federal Reserve with hard money officials.

There are currently two open Board of Governors seats, which will most likely not be filled before the end of President Obama’s tenure. Additionally, both Chair Janet Yellen and Vice-Chair Stanley Fischer’s terms will be up by 2018. Crunch the numbers and you will see that Trump has the opportunity to replace a majority of the Board of Governors and a third of the FOMC with monetary policy hawks during his presidency.

Call me crazy, but assuming that the Republican-controlled House and Senate stands behind him, I believe that Trump just may shock the financial world by shifting this country’s monetary policy in a more hawkish direction.

Yes, this is a guy that cheered on the Fed’s easy-money policies in the years before the Great Recession. And yes, Trump did say in May that he is still a “low interest rate person” who will appoint another dove to head the Federal Reserve. Why in the world, then, am I arguing that the Trump administration might possibly install more hawkish members to the central bank?
