Stonewall Jackson's Grandson: General Thomas Jonathan Jackson Christian Sr.

Gen Thomas Jonathan Jackson Christian

Very, very strange as I can find very little information on him.

PS

Found this and if correct, he would have been killed in the Korean War, I assume. It states in United States which makes no sense.

Cause of death: Shot in combat 1952

=====

This is more than strange.  Here we have a General officer in the US Army who was the grandson of Stonewall Jackson and the only information is from a grave and an ancestry site.  I'm stupefied to say the least.  Something is rotten in the country of Denmark, as my mother would say.  On top of this the VMI website is strangely absent of any information concerning the grandson and great grandson.

Terry sent this.

This page shows he retired in 1948, along with his other posts including XO at West Point 1939-40. Based on this I would question the accuracy of the shot in combat statement. (Indeed) There must be an obituary somewhere.

All comments have disappeared for the last 25 hours if anyone is wondering.

"CHRISTIAN, JR., THOMAS JONATHAN JACKSON (1915~1944) Thomas Jonathan Jackson Christian, Jr., Colonel in the United States Army Air Force and great grandson of Confederate General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, was born on November 19, 1915, in San Francisco, California to Thomas Jonathan Jackson Christian, Sr. and Bertha Marguerite Cook.

Christian attended the University of Chicago before entering the United States Military Academy at West Point on July 1, 1935. On June 12, 1939, he graduated 45th in a class of 456 and chose to enter the Field Artillery branch of the U. S. Army, his father's branch of service, where he was appointed a Second Lieutenant. Soon after making his branch decision, Christian changed his mind and joined the Army Air Corps.

From 1939 to 1941, Christian was a student in Texas at the Air Corps Primary Flying School at Love Field in Dallas, the Air Corps Training Center at Randolph Field and the Air Corps Advanced Flying School at Kelly Field, both in San Antonio.

After receiving training as a pilot, Christian was assigned to the Philippines, where, after the attacks on Pearl Harbor, he was reassigned to Bataan, Mindanao, Australia, and Guadalcanal. While there, he flew B-17s and was shot down and declared missing in action somewhere in the South Pacific. He was able to return to the base after living with natives in the jungle.

With the 1st Air Group, Christian landed on Guadalcanal on August 15, 1942. While there, he flew more than 60 hours in combat missions and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry.

After being granted leave, Christian returned to the United States, where on January 2, 1943, he married Marjorie Lou Ashcroft, whom he met while in Dallas. Their permanent residence was Sulphur Springs.

While in the U. S., he formed and trained the 361st Fighter Group. They were sent to England in November 1943. In Europe, Christian flew more than 70 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross with Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart. In March 1944 he was promoted to full Colonel.

While overseas, Christian became a father. His daughter, Lou Ellen, was born in January 1944, in Dallas.

Having never met his daughter, Christian was killed in action on August 12, 1944, while flying a P-51 Mustang, which was named Lou IV, in honor of his daughter. Colonel Christian was shot down over Arras, France and his body was never recovered."

Lou Ellen Wilson Loving Surrounded by family, Lou Ellen Wilson Loving died at home in Austin after a courageous battle with cancer on June 30, 2011. She was 67. Lou touched countless lives with her love, generosity, grace and unending smiles. Lou was born to Marjorie and Thomas Jonathan Jackson Christian in Dallas, Texas on January 31, 1944. Her father was the most photographed P-51 Mustang pilot of WWII. Lou would only know him through letters and photographs, but his love for her was clear and his pride was obvious, as he named his plane "Lou IV" after his only daughter.

Mission: Arras Marshalling Yards, France. (Dive Bombing)

Date: 12th August 1944

Unit: 361st Fighter Group, 375th Fighter Squadron, 8th U.S.A.A.F.

Type: Mustang P-51D

Serial: 44-13410 (LOU IV) (4th aircraft named after Col. Christian’s baby daughter)

Code: E2-C

Location: Arras France

Pilot: Colonel Thomas Jonathan Jackson J.R. Christian

REASON FOR LOSS:

Report by 2nd Lt. Robert J. Bain, pilot in Colonel Christian’s flight.
"I was flying position number three of a three ship flight, lead by Colonel Christian. We approached the railway marshalling yard at Arras France, from the north east direction at an altitude of 11,000 feet. We circled the target receiving instructions from Colonel Christian to make the bomb run from south to north, pulling up to the left after bombing. We were then in string formation, my position number two trailing our leader. Colonel Christian executed a half roll and split S, from an altitude of 11,000 feet. I watched his descent to at least 6,000 feet and then made my dive. Pulling out of my dive at 3,000 feet. I banked left and climbed to 6,000 feet and looked for the leader. Number three ship pulled up near to me, but neither he or I could find Colonel Christian. I observed a very good hit in the centre of the railway yard, not caused by number three man or myself and assumed it was the Colonel’s bombs. I repeatedly called our leader over the radio but never received an answer. The attack took place 15.05 hrs. 12th August 1944."

Shortly before his death Col Christian was photographed in his P-51D Mustang 44-13410 leading a group of four P-51s from the 361st Fighter Group. At the beginning of August 1944 the squadron increased the size of it’s yellow nose band identification colour, to include the whole of the engine cowling, it is therefore believed that these photos were taken just a few days before he was tragically killed in action on the 12th. Below is a selection of photos that were taken that day. (Open link above)

Further information:

A graduate of the West Point Class of 12 June 1939 and great grandson of the Confederate General Thomas J 'Stonewall' Jackson, Col Christian was lost on operations on 12 Aug 1944, whilst attacking the railway marshalling yard at Boisleux au Mont, a few miles south of Arras. He was 28 years old and had commanded the 361st FG since its activation with the P-47 at Richmond Army Air Base, Virginia, on 10 Feb 43. The 361st FG sailed to the UK onboard the Queen Mary on 23 Nov 43, arriving on the Clyde 6 days later. The unit operated from Bottisham in Cambridgeshire from 30 Nov 43 till 26 Sep 44, from where Christian flew his last sortie. The unit acquired its P-51s from May 44 onwards. Colonel Christian took his last steps on a free and unbeaten nation's land on 12 Aug 44, took to the air and fought in order to bring freedom to a country under the heel of Nazi tyranny. Given Christian's Confederate lineage, it might appear incongruous that his death was so eerily in keeping with the pledge contained in this line of the Battle Hymn of the Republic: 'As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free'. Given that Generals Jackson and Lee are framed in stained glass either side of the text of the song in Washington National Cathedral, perhaps it is not surprising at all.

As a B-17 pilot flying from Guadalcanal, Christian had been shot down earlier in the war and posted as 'M.I.A.' over the South Pacific, but managed to make it back to friendly lines after surviving a period in the jungle with the help of natives. After returning to the United States, he married Marjorie Lou Ashcroft on 2 January 1943. His P-51D depicted in the accompanying photograph, Lou IV, was named after his daughter, Lou Ellen, who was born in January 1944 and whom he never saw. Lou IV had another name, 'Athelene', emblazoned on the starboard cowling. It is believed to be the name of the wife or partner of the aircraft's crew chief, S/Sgt D Jameson. Christian was piloting 'LouIV/Athelene' when he perished. Although Christian did not achieve any air-to-air victories, 'Lou IV' did in fact account for 2 German aircraft in the hands of other pilots. In Europe, Christian flew more than 70 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross with Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

On 12 Aug 44, the day on which Col Christian was lost, the US 8th Air Force launched 1330 aircraft (B-17, B-24, P-38, P-47 and P-51s) against targets in central, east and north-east France (8th Air Force Mission 545). 18 aircraft failed to return (including four P-51s from the 361st FG, including Lou IV). 6 enemy aircraft were claimed as destroyed in the air (1 by an escort P-47 and 5 by P-38s); 13 further enemy aircraft were claimed as destroyed on the ground by P-47s. Colonel Christian went missing during an attack on the railway marshalling yard at Boisleux au Mont, a few miles south of Arras. Approaching the marshalling yards from the North-East, he had briefed his formation to attack from the South. After performing a half-roll and split-S from 11,000 feet to acquire the target, Christian led his formation's attack at 15.05hrs and was not seen again, although his No 2 believed he had made good hits with his bombs. Eyewitnesses claim to have seen a wing come away from Christian's aircraft before it crashed, but the precise cause of Lou IV's destruction is not known.

A full day of timely and informative lectures, audience interaction and thought-provoking political discussion.

From presentations on the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence and Halifax Resolves -- two home-grown measures of patriotism and independence – that compared 1775-1776 with the political turmoil of today; to the question of Christians voting for a lesser evil which is still evil; to an expert review and analysis of North Carolina’s recent election results and what can be expected from the new governor and Republican-dominated legislature.

The year 2013 will be busy for the NC LS as we pressure this legislature and governor to resist Washington’s usurpation of power not authorized by the Constitution, and help them understand the meaning and intent of the Tenth Amendment.

Patriots of '61 - Major Charles Manly Stedman - Last Confederate Officer in Congress

Patriots of ’61 – Major Charles Manly Stedman of Chatham County

Born at Pittsboro, Chatham County on 29 January 1841, his family moved to Fayetteville when he was twelve years old.  At age sixteen he entered the University of North Carolina, took first honors in his studies, and was to be salutatorian of his class though interrupted by the war.  He volunteered as a private in the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry; subsequently he rose to captain of Company E, (Chatham County), 44th North Carolina Regiment; then regimental field rank of major on 28 July 1862.

Major Stedman was one of twelve North Carolina soldiers who held the distinction of fighting in the first battle at Bethel Church and who ended the war with Lee at Appomattox. He was wounded three times and distinguished himself at Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, and Ream’s Station in late August 1864 when four North Carolina brigades assaulted, and, virtually unaided, drove Warren’s Corps in a complete rout from behind their breastworks.

After the war he returned to Chatham County to teach, studied law under John Manning, and moved to Wilmington in 1867 to practice law.  There he married Miss Catherine Wright in 1866, daughter of Joshua Grainger Wright.  Major Stedman was elected as Lieutenant-Governor in 1884 and served 1885-1889; he ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1890 when he lost to Judge Fowls. Due to poor health, Stedman relocated to Asheville, North Carolina in 1891.

Major Stedman also served president of the North Carolina Bar Association, director of the North Carolina Railroad, and Trustee of the University of North Carolina.  He was among the original charter members of Wilmington’s distinguished Cape Fear Club, incorporated in 1872 and today the oldest men’s club in continuous operation. The last home of the Wilmington Light Infantry on Market Street was previously owned by Major Stedman until his departure from Wilmington.

In 1910 he was elected to Congress from the Fifth District where he served continuously until his death on 23 September, 1930.  At the time of his death at 89 years, Major Stedman was the last Confederate officer serving in the United States Congress.  His body was laid to rest with full military honors in Cross Creek Cemetery in Fayetteville.

Mr. A. Wayland Cooke said of Major Stedman in 1914, nominating him for a third term:

“If I were to name his greatest traits of character I should say that they were his constant and unswerving adherence to duty, his absolute fearlessness and fortitude, his eminent truthfulness and his fidelity to his friends….he is one of the highest type of men the State of North Carolina has ever produced. I commend to you as a soldier of the South who was first at Bethel, four years in the service without a furlough, and who laid down his arms with Lee at Appomattox, and the officer of the Southern army now in Congress.”

What if George W. Bush?

Via Terry

VERBATIM

Let me draw a scenario for you. George W. Bush won the election of 2000. What if the state of Massachusetts seceded from the union on December 20th, 2000? Now let’s say the rest of New England joined Massachusetts before President Bush was sworn into office. All the states in question heralded the founding documents went doing so.

Shortly after being sworn into office President Bush asks the U.S. military to mobilize against New England. What if after this mobilization, the mid-western states join New England in defiance of what they saw as a tyrannical government based in D.C. that was highly sectional, and was hell bent on destroying the way of life of the northern people.

What if George W. Bush threatened to imprison the state legislature of Ohio, if they talked of secession? What if, in the coming months, the President then jailed the editors of the Dallas Morning News, The Atlanta Journal Constitution and the New Orleans Times-Picayune? Simply because these editors did not agree with his agenda, and questioned why we had to go to war with the north?

What if the President agreed to create a new state out of Indiana, and called it South Indiana, which violated the Constitution. What if many of the people in southern Indiana didn’t want to go to war with the north, but the southern military invaded the area, and killed those who resisted?

What if President Bush issued an arrest warrant for Chief Justice William Rehnquist, and arrested and or imprisoned a large swath of influential citizens in Pennsylvania? What if the President deported a congressman from Virginia who disagreed with him? With that he also suspended habeus corpus and declared martial law in Maryland and Delaware.

What if President Bush invaded the north with the express purpose of keeping them in the union? What if the war was going poorly for the south and after finally finding some competent generals, the President allowed one of his armies to destroy every morsel of civilization on a path from St. Louis to Detroit; destroying homes, killing livestock, burning entire cities to the ground, raping women, and stealing everything of value?

What if after four years of this war to save the union, some six million people lay dead on both sides of the border? What if after a few decades our descendants built him a memorial in the national capital, carved his face into stone and taught your grandchildren and their progeny, how evil your ancestors were and how great President Bush was? What if every time you brought up the facts of what actually happened you were called derogatory names, and ridiculed as a lunatic? What if decades later the citizens the nation over gushed over President Bush, wrote books and directed movies that declared his greatness? Would you acquiesce to the lies? What story would you tell your children?

Would you tell them the real history? We are southern nationalists. This isn’t about any president or any party. It’s not about Bush or Obama or any president in the last handful of decades. None of them advocated for the southern people. This is about the future of our people.

Government, force, cops and jury trials

Via Jerry

VERBATIM

f there is one thing history has taught us, it has rubbed our noses in the plain fact that governments abuse power. Governments have the ability to bring force to bear in order to achieve their goals.

When a politician says "This is a law" what he is really saying is, "We will use force to make you do this, or to stop you from doing it. We'll take your stuff and we'll wreck your life; we'll put you in a steel cage for years - maybe even the rest of your life. We'll hit you with sticks or shoot you with an electrical charge if you resist us and, ultimately we will kill you if you will not comply with our directives."

When the government wants to deprive you of your life, liberty or property, it is supposed to go to court and make its case for why this should happen.

YOU are supposed to be presumed to be innocent of the government's charges and the government has to make its case. The unspoken assumption is that the government will do what it has done for centuries: lie, cheat and defraud in order to achieve its goal.

The police, in their various forms and agencies, are the ones who employ the force of government. They are given guns and other tools to enforce their immediate will upon you.

History has shown us, over and over again, that the police, as agents of the government, will lie, cheat and defraud in an effort to achieve their goal of forcing their will upon us.

Over the course of the last 3 - 4 years, me and others have posted case after case after case demonstrating that the improper, immoral use of force by the police is not a sometime thing. It is an all the time thing in America today.

They will kick down our doors in the middle of the night and drag us out on the lawn for our neighbors to see; they'll shoot our children and our moms and set them on fire with flash bangs.

They'll destroy our property, they'll take whatever they think they can keep or sell without charging us with a crime.

They'll shoot our dogs, our friends and neighbors and members of our family and then clam up and get a compliant judge to seal the warrant.

They'll lie to get warrants from compliant judges and then break into our homes and kill us when we try to defend ourselves.

They will lie and commit conspiracy to defraud us of our rights. They'll attack us and destroy our property or put us in jail when we try to document their abuses on film.

And then, along comes folks like MGD45, defenders who insist that, evidence to the contrary, we automatically assume that it is the individual victims of the police who are the liars, cheats and defrauders and the police are the innocent victims.

Guys, America is under siege by its government and their armed agents. When I read stories like those posted here this week, I WILL NOT automatically assume the cops are the innocent victims. I will draw whatever conclusions I wish from these stories, and I will continue to advocate for punishments and penalties for cops that are at least 10x greater than what the average street thug would get - because a cop knows better and the crimes he commits are done under the protection of the law.

It's past time for politicians and their enforcers to learn who is really in charge here.

Two More Stimulus-Backed Solar Companies Announce Layoffs

A pair of foreign-owned solar companies that benefited from a combined $84 million in Energy Department tax credits have announced they will lay off employees.

One of the companies, German-owned SolarWorld, was integral in the fight for tariffs against the importation of Chinese photovoltaic solar panels. The other, Chinese company SunTech, blamed those tariffs for its own layoffs.

Both companies benefited from the Energy Department’s stimulus-funded Advanced Energy Manufacturing (48C) Tax Credit. The 48C credit is worth up to 30% of the cost of manufacturing qualifying green energy projects.

Drugs during long term survival situations (Part I: Alcohol)

Today most people drink alcohol because they want to get away sometimes from hard reality or just to have some short good time. Another simple reason many people drink in my country is they have been scared, or they just can not take it any more.

Why did drugs become more important during the war?

In hard times people experience lot of different emotions. Fear, courage, anxiety, crazyness or not logical bravery and so on. Fighting to survive was also new feeling for most. People needed something to melt all that together, thats why drugs were so important.

When you are inside your head in complete chaos, so many different emotions, using drugs to get away from everything to get one feeling that you know, even if feeling is not real and just you taking something, it is relief. It feels like you get to place you are familiar with in world that is full of chaos and suffering.

Alcohol becomes your very good friend, it became mine too. It was ticket to short ride somewhere else from very bad reality. Everybody drink or (and) smoke marijuana in that time, but more about marijuana in next post.

Alcohol

Alcohol has many good sides. It is useful for hygiene or to trade or give as present.

 JOSEPH HEWES

Joseph Hewes was born at Kingston in New Jersey, in the year 1730. His parents, at the time of their marriage, resided in Connecticut, and belonged to the society of Friends.

From Connecticut they removed to New Jersey, where they found a quiet and tranquil retreat in Kingston, a short distance from Princeton.

This proved a very favorable circumstance to Joseph, for when he attained to the proper age for pursuing his studies the vicinity of his father’s dwelling to the college in Princeton, furnished him with facilities for procuring an education such as a more distant residence from a seminary of learning would have precluded.

Having finished his academic studies, he went immediately to Philadelphia, and entered as an apprentice to a merchant, to qualify himself for commercial business.

On the close of his apprenticeship, he commenced business on his own account, and by means of peculiar advantages, which at that time attended the colonies, in connection with the protection to merchant ships afforded by the British flag, Mr. Hewes rapidly acquired property. His residence for several years, was divided between New York and Philadelphia, as his business demanded his attention in the one place or the other.

At the age of about thirty years, he removed to North Carolina, and settled in Edenton, which he afterwards made his home for life.

WH denies editing ‘al Qaida’ out of Rice talking points — blames CIA

Must have been the tooth fairy

White House Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes put the blame back on the Central Intelligence Agency when asked about former CIA director David Petraeus’ claim that  UN Ambassador Susan Rice’s talking points were edited to downplay al Qaida’s role in the Benghazi terrorist attack.

“[T]he only edit that was made by the White House and also by the State Department was to change the word ‘consulate’ to the word ‘diplomatic facility,’ since the facility in Benghazi was not formally a consulate,” Rhodes told reporters today during a press gaggle. “Other than that we were guided by the points that were provided by the intelligence community.”

Rhodes did not specifically acknowledge that al Qaida’s name was ever purged from the talking points. “I can’t speak to any other edits that may have been made,” he said.

The Decline and Fall of America

A few days after the election of 2012 the very talented Michael Ramirez published a political cartoon that perhaps conveyed a more profound meaning than he anticipated. He depicted a pair of hands extending from star-studded sleeves (presumably from a mendicant Uncle Sam), which were held in supplication, as though waiting for a handout or petitioning voters to relinquish more of their earnings to the federal government.

There’s another way of interpreting this image, however; the hands appeared not only pathetic and a bit contemptible, but also aged and withered, as though belonging to an old man. In which case, this representation captured perfectly the situation of the United States as it enters the second decade of the 21st century: America is getting older and is entering a state of decline.

No one understood the dynamics of aging societies approaching decrepitude better than Mancur Olson, an economist who taught at the University of Maryland until his death in 1998. Olson’s crowning achievement was a book published in 1982 titled, “The Rise and Decline of Nations.” Olson argued that the proliferation of interest groups (collusions or distributional coalitions, in his terms) eventually spells doom for the societies they inhabit.

'Obamacare Surcharge' Could Go National, Business Federation Warns

VERBATIM

The five percent "Obamacare surcharge" levied by a Florida restaurant chain boss could catch on nationally, a spokesman for the 350,000 member National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) says.

John Mertz, who "runs approximately 40 Denny's and owns the Hurricane Grill & Wings franchise" made news today in an article reporting the new surcharge:

'With Obamacare due to be fully implemented in January 2014, Metz has justified his move by claiming it is 'the only alternative. I've got to pass on the cost to the customer.''

Will the "Obamacare surcharge" catch on with other retailers in the U.S.?

NFIB spokesman Kevan Chapman tells "The Right Views" that it just might:

"Clearly, you are seeing what real people are doing with costly situations. This is no different than the airline carriers adding a bag fee or noting the TSA extra expense.

"I suspect this Denny's owner wants his customers to understand why their costs are going up and what they must do to handle the cost increase.

"Frankly, they are just being honest with the customer. It's possible you may see more of this as employers begin major preparation for the law."

Obama's National Retirement System scheme

Via Billy

Now that Barack Obama has been reelected he's going to push harder than ever to seize private retirement accounts. To sign NSC's emergency petition against Obama's new National Retirement System scheme, just click here.

NSC has taken the lead in warning the nation about this new government onslaught and is plotting ways to stop it.

"This effort ultimately is designed to grab the retirement nest eggs of America’s senior citizens. This new government annuity scheme, even if it is at first optional, will turn into a giant effort to redistribute the wealth of America’s older citizens," explains Crone. "This scheme mirrors what I expect the President will try to do with Social Security. He wants to turn that program into a welfare program, too."

NSC will likely unveil a new grassroots campaign effort later this year or early in January to coincide with the seating of the new Congress.
