Heil to the Chief

Since the surrender at Appomattox, the South has been virtually excluded from two of the three branches of the national government. We can count on the fingers of one hand the number of Southerners who have been appointed to the Supreme Court or elected to the presidency. Most of those who have been elevated to one of these high offices have been Unionists-men of Northern principles.

Indeed, not a single states’ rights Southern conservative has occupied the White House since John Tyler, and of the small handful of Southerners who have served on our nation’s highest tribunal since 1865, most have been hostile or indifferent to conservative values and the rights of the States.

Only in the Congress, during the last 130 years, has the South had a real voice; and even here it has been the feeble voice of a beleaguered minority, rarely unified and often compromised by the liberalism of its members or the interest group ties of its party leaders. There have been some notable filibusters to slow things down, and the South once had a lock on some committee chairmanships, but these are eddies in a torrent of liberal Unionism. Reconstruction, an ongoing enterprise for helping to keep the South in its place, extends down to the present.

Is Donald Trump a Jacksonian?

Is President Trump a “Jacksonian”?  He apparently believes so:  On his fifth day in office he installed a portrait of President Andrew Jackson in the Oval Office, and he recently visited the last resting place of his presidential predecessor in Nashville.  His top political strategist, Steve Bannon, has said that the president likes to compare the populist movement behind him to a similar movement that supported Andrew Jackson and which infuriated the entrenched elites of his day.

And infuriate he did.  Court historians and other propagandists for the state and state power have long portrayed Andrew Jackson as a country bumpkin, an ignoramus, a tool of corrupt bankers, and worse.

The ultimate Ivy League snob, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., was especially disdainful of Jackson in his writings.   Based on this fact alone, you know the man must have been one of the better presidents.

Trump and the Presidency

Dear Fellow American,

In the first 60 days, Donald Trump’s presidency has proven to be one of the most unorthodox administrations in the modern era. He promised that he would buck traditional lines of communication, crony political appointments, and the Washington status quo—and so far he is making good on that promise. By voting for Trump, an overwhelming number of Americans rejected business as usual.

But what is “business as usual” for the President of the United States? What did the founders intend when they designed the office?

We have a front row seat to one of the most interesting presidencies in our nation’s history. But we must also understand the proper, good, and lawful role of the President according to the Constitution. The Executive Branch was designed to be powerful, but with important—constitutional—constraints.

To help you deepen your understanding, Hillsdale College offers you their popular online course for free – “The Presidency and the Constitution.” When you sign up for this free online course the first lesson will be emailed to you immediately, with additional lessons to follow in the coming weeks.

I urge you as an American citizen to take this course and deepen your understanding of the proper role of the President in a constitutional republic.

Warm Regards,

Time and the Tidewater: Thoughts and Remembrance

If the reader will permit me this once a somewhat personal and idiosyncratic essay–heretofore I have never been either personal or idiosyncratic–I will promise never to do it again. No one can doubt the reliability of my promises.

I have played in writing over the years with my birth in West Virginia and my consequent but imaginary possession of twelve toes. (Most readers will not care where I was born, and a fair few clearly wish that I hadn’t been. Well, this isn’t your day.) Anyway, I entered this world in Bluefield General Hospital, McDowell County, West Virginia, because my mother was staying with her father, a medical doctor in Crumpler, an unincorporated coal camp up the holler from North Fork, while my father was gunnery officer aboard a destroyer in the Pacific.

In fact my people are pure Cavalier stock of the Virginia Tidewater. I am Frederick Venable Reed Jr, my mother’s maiden name being Betty Venable Rivers–a cousin marriage, which some will suggest explains a lot. The Venables were prominent in the gentility of Southside Virginia.

Russian bank tells DOJ mysterious Trump computer connections may have been hacker hoax

Via Billy

A Russian bank has reported to U.S. authorities that mysterious communications resumed recently between one of its computers and an email server tied to President Trump’s business empire, and it has developed evidence the new activity may be the work of a hacker trying to create a political hoax, Circa has learned.

Alfa Bank is asking the U.S. Justice Department for help solving the mystery and pledged its full cooperation.
Alfa wants U.S. authorities to help unmask a computer inside the United States that it believes has been used to launch cyberattacks spoofing the appearance of a backdoor communication channel between Moscow and America’s 45th president, according to a source directly familiar with the bank’s request.

Almost a quarter of the nation’s public school students live in immigrant households, raising questions about America’s long-term ability to continue its tradition of assimilation, according to a study released Thursday.

The report, published by the Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies, indicates that 23 percent of public school students live in a household with at least one immigrant parent. That is more than double the percentage in 1990 and up from 7 percent in 1980.

No More Gravy Train for the United Nations: Trump administration contemplates 50% reduction in U.S. funding.

Via Billy

Bureaucrats and diplomats at the United Nations are scrambling to adjust to the new Trump administration. One thing seems certain. The Obama days of wine and roses for the UN are over. The Trump administration is reportedly laying the groundwork for cuts of at least 50% to U.S. funding for United Nations programs. U.S. diplomats warned key UN member states  to “expect a big financial restraint” on American spending at the UN at a meeting earlier this month in New York City, according to sources cited by Foreign Policy.

The United States spent nearly $10 billion in total on the United Nations in 2015 alone, based on available data. This includes U.S. payment of 22 % of the UN’s regular budget and about 28.5% of its peacekeeping budget, which together add up to over $3 billion annually. The U.S. has contributed billions of dollars more in voluntary donations to various UN agencies, programs and flash humanitarian appeals. Based on available 2015 data, cutting just the U.S. voluntary contributions by 40 % would save about $2.7 billion a year.

It has been estimated that the U.S.’s mandatory assessment for funding of the UN’s regular budget is more than that of 176 other UN member states combined.

Sierra Leone pastor unearths one of the largest diamonds ever found

709-carat diamond

An African church minister who supplements his meagre stipend by scrabbling for minerals in the artisanal mines of eastern Sierra Leone has discovered one of the largest diamonds ever found.

The 709-carat stone was extracted this week by Emmanuel Momoh, a pastor in one of the myriad churches that ministers to the mining communities of Kono district, the diamond centre that became the crucible of Sierra Leone’s blood-soaked civil war.

It is believed to be the 13th largest uncut diamond ever to be pulled from the ground, industry analysts said.

Turkish Foreign Minister ÇavuÅŸoÄŸlu: ‘Holy Wars Will Soon Begin in Europe’

Via Billy

In one of the first reactions from Ankara to the Dutch election result, Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlüt ÇavuÅŸoÄŸlu, warned that Europe was heading towards the abyss and that ‘holy wars’ would soon begin on the continent – this coming despite the fact that nationalist Geert Wilders, a vocal critic of Islam, was pushed into second place by the center right Prime Minister, Mark Rutte.

Çavuşoğlu, who has been addressing Turkish crowds across Europe ahead of a constitutional referendum in Turkey next month, was refused permission to land in Holland for a campaign rally on Saturday, sparking a heated diplomatic row and street protests which dominated the final days of the Dutch election campaign.

The dramatic war of words, which saw Ankara accuse the Dutch government of ‘fascism’ and of being a ‘Nazi remnant’, has grown in recent days to include other Western European nations which have restricted Turkish political rallies on their soil, most notably Austria and Germany, but also Denmark and Switzerland.

Bundy Trial Update: Judge May Not Allow Defendants Biggest Accuser To Be Questioned In Front Of Jury

Via Billy

The utter hypocrisy that is being demonstrated in the Bundy Ranch trial by those who swore an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution from both foreign and domestic enemies is quite telling as to the level of corruption we are seeing in our land today.  Furthermore, it is demonstrating that many of those who have taken that oath not only don't know what the Constitution says, but also have become the very domestic enemies they proclaim to oppose because of their ignorance.

Doc Holliday’s Beloved Derringer Returns to Colorado & 3D-Printed 40mm Grenade Launcher

Doc Holliday’s derringer has gone home thanks to the efforts of a Colorado town’s historical society and a graceful seller. Glenwood Springs hopes that the return of Holliday’s hold-out pistol will help cement the town’s Old West history for all to see.

The derringer was a gift to Holliday from his wife, Mary Katherine “Big Nose Kate” Horony-Cummings, a Hungarian-born prostitute. The engraved frame reads “To Doc from Kate.” It is one of the few personal objects believed to be with him on his deathbed in Glenwood Springs.

Legendary gunslinger, gambling dentist Doc Holliday died on Nov. 8, 1887, aged 36, of tuberculosis.

He was visiting Glenwood’s hot springs to tend to his illness. Holliday died under the watchful eyes of nurses, not with his boots on as he always swore. Looking at his bare feet, his dying words were, “This is funny.”

Morning Consult/POLITICO: Trump Approval, Voter Optimism on the Rise

More Americans approve of the job Donald Trump is doing as president and of the direction the country is headed, according to Morning Consult/POLITICO surveys conducted over the past six weeks.

The most recent poll, conducted March 9-13, found that 52 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance, compared with a 49 percent approval rating shortly after Inauguration Day. This month’s survey found that 43 percent of respondents do not approve of the president’s job performance.

Trump’s Budget Is A Full-Scale Assault On Obama’s ‘Climate Action Plan’ (Sounds good to me!)

Aiming to meet major campaign promises, President Donald Trump’s budget proposal slashes funds to the bureaucracy and eliminates programs the Obama administration used to promote green energy and fight global warming.

The White House recommends funding a $54 billion increase in defense spending by cutting federal agency spending. Trump said the budget plan “puts America first by keeping more of America’s hard-earned tax dollars here at home.”

The proposal cuts billions of dollars from agencies used to promote former President Barack Obama’s “Climate Action Plan,” including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Energy and Department of State.

US Navy TBF Avenger gunner from USS Essex is buried at sea with his aircraft

Via Cousin Colby

A Grumman TBF avenger torpedo bomber of VT-15 Torpedo Air Group, approaches and lands on the deck of the USS Essex (CV-9) during the Battle of Manila Bay, in World War 2. Upon landing, Lt. Robert Cosgrove (Pilot) and Sailor Digby Denzek (Radioman) can be seen in their respective forward and middle crew positions. But the rear gunner position, occupied by Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class,Loyce Edward Deen (Gunner) has been completely destroyed by enemy 40mm shell fire. As the aircraft is parked amongst others, with wings folded, sailors of the Essex take fingerprints and cut dog tags from the body of AMM2C Loyce Deen in the gunner position.

Captain Carlos W. Wieber, Commanding Officer of the Essex, and her crew, participate in funeral services on the deck. A chaplain conducts the services from beside the aircraft, where Loyce Deen's remains in the gunner's position have been shrouded. Closeup view of Rear Admiral Frederick C. Sherman during the burial service. A bugler sounds taps. Beside the bugler is David L. McDonald, who was XO of the USS Essex (and later Chief of Naval Operations in the 1960s). Deen's remains are then buried at sea in the TBF avenger in which he perished. The aircraft floats off the fantail for a short time before sinking from view. Two TBF Avengers are seen flying overhead , in tribute. Crew members then disband and return to their duties. Location: Manila Philippines. Date: November 5, 1944.

Florida Governor Replaces Soros Funded State Attorney in Cop Killer Death Penalty Case

Via Billy

Florida State Attorney, Aramis Ayala announced on Thursday that she would not be seeking the death penalty in any case, including the case of a man accused of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend and a police officer, the state’s Governor, Rick Scott asked her to recuse herself from the Markeith Loyd case, CBS reports.

Via CBS:
When Ayala refused, Governor Rick Scott removed her.
“I completely disagree with State Attorney Ayala’s decision and comments,” Scott said.
“She has made it abundantly clear that she will not fight for justice for Lt. Debra Clayton and our law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day.”
“I have seen the video of Markeith Loyd executing Lt. Debra Clayton while she lay defenseless on the ground. She was given no chance to live. A cop killer — who also killed his pregnant girlfriend — should not be given that chance,” Orlando police Chief John Mina said in a statement posted to Twitter. “The heinous crimes that he committed in our community are the very reason we have the death penalty as an option under the law.”

Hawaii Obama Judge Rules Muslim Imam Has Special Constitutional Rights to Bring Anyone from Terror Countries into America after Obama Goes to Hawaii

Via Bill

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C7AMqH9VAAAOHfM.jpg

In a ruling issued on Wednesday afternoon, a federal judge, and Obama appointee, prevented the President of the United States from enforcing his own executive order to protect the nation from migrants from terror-riddled countries.

The judge then prevented every other judge and every other state from following the President’s order, the judge making himself a one-man Supreme Court and substitute President.

The judge then held that American universities and immigrants living here can prohibit America from ever limiting immigration from Muslim-heavy countries, claiming the First Amendment gives Muslim-dominant nations a right of immigration to America.

Such arrogance and abuse of authority sound familiar? Such First Amendment favoritism toward Islam sound familiar? Well, Obama did appoint this judge, and a rule of thumb with federal judges is they tend to mirror the psychologies of the man who appointed them.

The judge’s ruling is completely lawless, mirroring Obama’s deep state allies in his shadow government’s attempt to sabotage the Trump presidency. There is no precedent for the court’s order.

In fact, every precedent is against the court’s order; just read the detailed logic and scholastic citation of proper governing legal authorities from the decision of a moderately liberal Boston judge who upheld every part of Trump’s prior order.
