The Rijks museum in Holland had an idea: Let's bring the art to the people and then, hopefully, they will come to see more - at the museum. They took one Rembrandt painting from 1642, Night Watch and brought to life the characters in it, placed them in a busy mall and the rest you can see for yourself!

Bush speechwriter: Obama plagiarized GWB’s 2007 SOTU
Plagiarist-in-chief
Naw, he's such a truthful man...........:)
Naw, he's such a truthful man...........:)
Bruce Drake, writing at Pew Research Center’s Fact Tank, notes:
Barack Obama and George Bush have at least one thing in common when it comes to the second terms they won — the first year of their encores have been downers when it came to their public images. Both experienced falloffs in overall job approval and in Americans’ perceptions of their leadership, ability to get things done and trustworthiness.
For one observer, even last night’s State of the Union address had an oddly familiar ring, sounding like something George W. Bush might have said. That’s because the words were something Bush did say. Mark Thiessen, the observer in question and lead Bush speechwriter, had written them for Bush’s 2007 SOTU.

Giant rats put noses to work on Mozambique's landmines
Via Jonathan
A small army of landmine-detecting rats is to be redeployed in Mozambique in a push to meet a deadline to have the country declared free of mines this year.
Belgian non-governmental organisation Apopo trains African giant pouched rats to sniff out the explosives in landmines by conditioning them to associate the scent with rewards of food.
The rodents, which weigh about as much as a small domestic cat, are light enough to move over terrain without setting off the mines. They are followed by a team of mine-removal experts with metal detectors.

Disabled homeowner who heard noises at front door shoots man
Via Bearing Arms
A disabled homeowner shot a man through a window with birdshot late Sunday during what San Antonio police say was an attempted burglary in the 1700 block of South Sabinas Street.
Ruben Hernandez, 54, was watching TV at his home at about 8:30 p.m. when he heard a loud banging that grew louder, according to a police report. A metal object was used to hit Hernandez's door, according to police.
Hernandez told police he heard the voice of a man, 19, whom he knew, yelling at him to come out.
Hernandez said he looked out the window and saw the man and two other men at the door. Hernandez told police he has had confrontations before where the man had threatened his life. Hernandez said the 19-year-old man and another man there, 23, have been involved in confrontations with Hernandez and Hernandez's son, including one several days earlier.

Two Knots for Mechanical Advantage
Creating a Block and Tackle Without Pulleys
The Trucker’s Hitch is not a single knot, but a knot system that acts like a block and tackle for tightening, hoisting, or hauling loads with mechanical advantage. You’re probably familiar with it, but it’s time to learn a couple of knots that will make this system easy to untie when you’re done, so you don’t have to cut the knot or waste time struggling to untie it. Review your knotting terms in last week’s Survival Tips article, which covers the Pipe Hitch and the Pile Hitch.
Watch the video for instructions (goes live early afternoon Jan 28).

I have learned that violence must be met with violence.
Via WiscoDave
I have learned through hard experience that I can fight, and that I can win. I can also lose, and so I take steps to minimize that risk. Part of that is the carry of a weapon. The gun is an extension of who I am. It is the tool of my identity. It is the symbol and the instrument of my personal inclination to face whatever comes.
The basic duty of man is the responsible application of violence to counter the less responsible. It is who I am, who we are. Because there comes a time when philosophizing is counter-productive. When the wolf comes, will you contemplate his true nature, try to reason? Or will you put him down?”
