Texas governor signs bills expanding carrying of handguns

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed into law on Saturday bills allowing the open carrying of handguns in public and of concealed handguns on state university campuses, his office said.

Abbott, a Republican, said the measures secure Texans' rights to bear
arms guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment.
"Today, I am proud to expand liberty in the Lone Star State," Abbott said in a statement.

Nikki Haley has signed into law a bill to stop efforts to ‘Boycott, Divest and Sanction’ Israel and while the bill makes no mention of Israel directly, it prevents public entities from contracting with businesses engaging in the “boycott of a person or an entity based in or doing business with a jurisdiction with whom South Carolina can enjoy open trade.”

Who or what is a Special Forces commando? For once, the mystery surrounding the elite unit of the Dutch army is replaced by the real story. For the first time we experience what a real commando sees, does and thinks. During the UN peacekeeping mission MINUSMA in Mali, one commando kept a video diary. This commando, who filmed everything from his point of view, gives the viewer a unique glimpse into the life of a commando on mission in the eight-part series “Dagboek van Onze Helden – Commando in Mali”.
THE DUTCH MISSION IN MALI
Since April 2014, the Dutch Special Operations Forces are operating in the desert of the African country Mali. Mali is likely to be a breeding ground for terrorist organizations. For this reason, the UN peacekeeping mission MINSUMA was conceived.
The Dutch Special Operations forces form the 'eyes and ears' of this mission. The commandos gather intelligence and investigate where battling parties are located. That is not without danger. Attacks with homemade bombs, ambushes and raids are part of the daily threat. With the Dutch findings and intelligence further operations are considered. This makes the Dutch contribution very important and unique.

Vietnam: The loss of American innocence?

When Neil Armstrong took his small step for man in the lunar dust in July 1969, Americans saw it as proof there were no Earthly limits. Nothing then seemed beyond the reach of American power, prestige and know-how. It took Vietnam to expose the hubris in that sentiment.
The American Century was at its zenith. Unrivaled U.S. wealth and prosperity, predictable fruits of the postwar Pax Americana, lifted national influence to new heights globally.
Hollywood, rock music, blue jeans and hamburgers carried American culture, taste and values to the far corners of the world.
Yet with images of Apollo 11 fresh on the mind, Vietnam forced Americans to accept limits to U.S. power and to acknowledge their reach had exceeded their grasp. With apologies to Robert Browning, that troublesome realization was not what they believed a heaven was for.
Fifty years later, the Vietnam War remains an enigma. Its legacy distorted by folklore, myth, political spin, cloudy memories and the perverted history of feature films and popular fiction. Yet it remains clear the war changed America in profound ways still not understood.
It changed who we are and how we see ourselves. It fundamentally revised our view of the world and the world’s view of us. It reshaped our institutions, particularly the military. It altered not only how we fight wars, but when and why we choose to fight.

NC: Failed Sting May Have Been Entrapment

has been monitoring progress of investigation into the botched
2009-2013 multi-agency sting operation code-named "Something Bruin".
Agencies
involved include the US Forest Service, the National Park Service, US
Fish and Wildlife Service and North Carolina and Georgia state wildlife
agencies. The four year, multimillion undercover operation was claimed
necessary to stop "known" bear poaching rings operating in North
Carolina and Georgia.
Victims recount "Gestapo-like" tactics
In February, 2013 dozens of agents in tactical gear carrying automatic weapons raided suspects' homes reportedly seizing everything from firearms, hunting equipment and mounted trophies, to boats, machinery and even toys. Reports are
that these raids were conducted without warrants, homes were
maliciously ransacked, and residents, including children, terrified.
Ultimately,
81 people were charged with 980 violations. Ten plead guilty to federal
misdemeanors, possibly under pressure to avoid costs associated with a
jury trial. Only one serious charge, illegally transporting a bear
carcass, has resulted in a conviction, after initial dismissal in
district court. The illegal transport across state lines in question was
apparently done by an undercover agent. The conviction is currently
being appealed.
